The first round of DCUC 2 packs are out in full force. They are a Toys R Us Exclusive, and it seems that the new figures are the peg warmers while the rereleases have been the hard to find figures in this wave.
Mattel announced last summer that they would be releasing DCUC two packs through Toys R Us. There are 4 in this first wave which include a New Gods set, a Batman Family set, a Superman villain set, and a Green Lantern set. The Batman and Superman sets are rereleases of harder to find figures from the DCSH line, but the New Gods and Green Lantern sets are mostly new figures.
The New Gods-

Part of this set is something that fans have been calling for since Wave One of the DCUC line. Back when we heard that Orion would be part of Wave One, Kastor’s Korner asked if there would be a removable helmet. Almost a year after the line was announced what fans were calling for finally arrived. Orion not only comes with his removable helmet, but he also has his harness; which in this world of less is more in toys, was a nice addition. There is no difference in this body from the Wave One release, but the head is a whole new sculpt. When you have a hat or helmet on a figure, most of the time it looks bulky or the head looks micro without, but this is not the case for this figure. There is one drawback to this addition: the helmet can scratch the face. The first box set I bought had scratches all over his face from the helmet, unfortunately you don’t know until you buy it and open it.

The second figure in this set is Lightray. I have to admit that when I first saw him, the only real exposure I had to the character was when he died during Countdown. Even with the lack of knowledge about the character, the more New Gods the better. The costume is well painted on the figures, but where he seems to have the most problems is in the face. It seemed like the majority of the ones I saw had what I called the Elvis smile. It was like someone had pushed in the right side of his mouth and made his lips curl. It was not too bad from the profile but when you look at him head on it was awkward. Whatever they did they, should ask Bill Murray if they could use his likeness, because it looks like him in Caddy Shack. I was able to get a better version from Jr, and now have a good set, though mine does have the same stuck biceps like most of the current figures. I don’t have a special place in my heart for the character, so he will be perfect in a vanilla pose.

Green Lanterns-

The second set I bought was the Green Lantern set. This is a set I was really looking forward to, because throughout my comic collecting life I put Hal and the Corps only slightly behind the Bat Family. It is not a perfect set, but the issues are cosmetic so I can live with them. The issue is that Abin Sur’s torso is incorrect, but Hal’s is correct. With a little hot water and some cold water this was an easy fix. Just boil and pop the head, and you have a correct Abin Sur. There have been rumors that it is a variant, but there has been nothing concrete to support this theory. The Hal that came with the set was the same as Wave 3, with the exception of unpainted shoulders. My only real criticism of the set is that you get 2 figures, but only one Lantern. It just seems that there should have been at least one more lantern for the figures, they are after all Green Lanterns.

I skipped the other two sets because I was able to get them as singles when they first came out. This has been a good start to get us more figures for the DCUC line, so bring on the next wave.
