Review: Marvel Universe Wave Three

After mornings on end of hunting for the wave three figures Bill and I both found them on the same day. I not only got all my figures, but got an extra Ms. Marvel to make a Dark Avengers version and start my Hand Ninja addiction. Check out how the new figures came out.

Ms. Marvel- Our first female of the line did not disappoint.  Not only did we get one, two versions of the character, but if you’re lucky enough to find two sets of them you could make your own third version, Dark Avengers Ms. Marvel.  The figure looks good in action poses, but when you pose her static, she loses some points.  One thing this line needs are thigh cuts for articulation.  I am not one to have articulation for articulation’s sake, but in this case I think it is needed.  The ability to turn her thigh would take away from the bow legged look and make this one of the best of the bunch.  Don’t get me wrong, I think they are great figures, but the classic one just looks a little off when you stand her because of that missing point of articulation.

Thing-  This has to be my favorite of the whole wave, and that is saying a lot, because it is such a great wave. The figure is larger than the rest like he should be, but is not too big.  He looks great next to either Johnny, and it makes you need the rest of the team.  The details on him are well done, compared to other figures in the this scale.  This is one example where Hasbro outdid Toybiz in this scale, and it makes up for the orange Cheeto from the Ronin BAF wave of Marvel Legends.

Punisher- This is one figure where you can see they tried to make something they did wrong better.  This body used for the Punisher is not a great body in any way.  From the bad knees to the awkward hands, he’s a mess, although this time at least they got the head right. I think if they mixed and matched this figure with the wave one, i.e. giving him white boots and gloves it would be a great figure.  As you can see, a simple head swap makes the wave one figure so much better.

Ironman- While I love the first version of Ironman, this is the suit that I always think of Ironman in.  The figure is candy apple red with gold, or rather yellow, armor.  The lines on the hands and boots add to the armor’s overall look.  Even this great figure has one drawback, his abs.  They looked elongated on the figure, taking away from the feeling that this is a man in a metal suit and not a spandex hero.

Spiderman- I was not happy at all with wave one Spidy, and like the Punisher they get this wave 3 version right.  He is taller and thinner than the first figure, like Spidy should be.  In his black costume he just looks menacing.  While wave one Punisher had too much blue wash over the figure, Spidy has just enough to really make the figure pop.  Now if they could just come up with an accessory that makes sense for Spidy we will be all set.  That over done web is just too big for him.

Hand Ninja-  These guys are going to put me in the poor house, and my friend over at Hasbro will be laughing about it all the way to the bank.  I have 3 and almost bought 5 more this weekend.  I am not an army builder kind of guy, but these figures are very cool.  They come with 3 weapons, a staff, a sword and a knife.  This leads to tons of different combinations of weapons for them to use.  Yes, they do use the Ronin body, but they are just different enough to make them worth getting more than one of them.

Over all this is a great wave and this line continues to improve wave after wave, though missing a certain purple skinned hero.
