Our first Matty set give us a Titian and a major hero in the DCU, but our second set gives us an alternate Earth Superman and Luthor. Was the set worth the wait of an extra two months, when one figure looks like a a buck with a cape? Find out inside.
As far as figures go there is no doubt this is one of the better figures we have gotten out of the DCUC line. Alex is one of the more detailed figures in the line despite what looks like Orion under all the new parts. What sets him apart from the usual buck reuse is the texture of the cuffs, they look like fabric rather than just plastic. The lines are uneven and it gives it a much softer look then we are used to in this line. Even the chest piece has a slightly textured look, giving it the look of fabric. The head is an amazing sculpt and the paint is flawless on my figure, making this one of the better figures. With the helmet and the facial features there was a huge chance for paint issues , but the eyes are straight, and there is no paint bleed on the figure, so bottom line? Best figure to date in the two pack line.

I can’t say much about the paint on the Ultraman figure, but I can say I just paid over $15 for a DCUC buck. I don’t see much difference between this figure and the Eradicator from wave 5, even he is hard to get your hands on thanks to Matty selling out on the first round of these two packs. The cape is crimped in the back and while he looks all right from the front, the side profile is awkward and has an almost JLU lean going for him. The new head sculpt sets him apart form the other Superman figures but he is just not a great figure. I understand the reasoning of giving us a Superman and Luthor, but I think Owlman would have been a stronger figure to give us to introduce the evil Crime Syndicate.

Am I happy with this set? Moderately. It is an ok set, but I think the thought of starting something that has no end is sight was more of a tease than a gift. They have stated that the Earth 3 figures are out of the running for a while, and from what I know it will be a while before we see the rest of the characters from this team. I think overall, choices like this only hurt the line. When the sales are not as great as a line like Masters of the Universe, it tells the powers that be at Mattel that the line is not doing as well as it could be. The reason that these are harder sells is that they are lesser known characters. If you made this a set with A list characters and their villains or teammates they would sell better. Putting lesser known characters in the main line with a BAF part would help sell those and save these sets for bigger names, promising that the fans would buy them just like the MOTU line.
