Review: SDCC Wonder Twins

When I found out the Wonder Twins was going to be the SDCC 2009 DCUC exclusive, I was thrilled for many reasons, but as the Con got closer, this set became the focus for Mattel haters.  Limited numbers, Con exclusive extras, and line issues made for a bit of mess. Find out more inside.

When the set was first leaked online, the collectors were split on the set.  Those of us who grew up during the Super Powers era were ecstatic, those who were DC fans before or after that time period did not want the set, but were happy they were not part of the main line.

Then the trio was turned into a duo, which angered both sides of the debate.  Gleek, the Twin’s pet monkey and sidekick, became an SDCC exclusive, though the Twins alone could be bought after the SDCC on the Matty Collector site.  I don't want to spend time talking about pre-Con, so check out the blog I did on him a few months ago.  Then the Con started and the first night only people with general admission passes were allowed to buy the set.  The line was insane, some waited in line most of the night and did not move an inch. Preview Night was ending and people would not leave the line, so Mattel responded by giving out fast passes for the line the next day.  The line continued to be an issue every day of the Con. The main issue that came up was the fact that Mattel stated that they did not produce the same number of Gleeks as Wonder Twins for the Con so those waiting till Sunday or who only had Sunday passes would not get the bonus figure, though a box of 100 or so were found later and given away on Fwoosh.  In fact, as of Saturday morning of the Con the Gleeks were sold out.

After all the drama about the set, how did they come out?

Both figures are basic bucks so there is nothing special about the bodies. The head sculpts are well executed, they have very cheesy grins on their face like they stepped right out of the cartoons. On the positive side, the figures lack paint issues. Having to buy these items blind, it’s nice to know that the quality control on this line has stepped up.

Most of the DCUC figures are posed in the package dynamically, and the twins are no exception. They are in the famous Wonder Twins power activate pose, which works great with this box. The box is built to make a shield at the top of the box when closed, and when open it has the figures fist to fist, with lights and sounds going off to recreate the feeling of the cartoon. Mattel had a video of the box on their Youtube page before the convention.

As with most of the DCUC line this set comes with accessories, which are a pail of water and an eagle. The eagle is a nice addition to the line up of DCUC, being reused in the Beast Boy figure. Now on to the real accessory, Gleek. He has articulation at the shoulders and neck, has a great paint job, and can be held by the eagle while holding the bucket. Those who were not able to get him, check out the boards there have been some customs, and I’m sure at some point someone will cast a mold of him for those who missed out.

Over all this set was amazing, and once again the box stole the show thanks to the great mind of package designer, Frank Varela.
