Review: DCUC Gotham 5 Pack

The DCUC Walmart 5 pack is a hard box set to review, but I do have some thoughts on what makes this set a must have for most DCUC collectors.

For $54 this set does not seem worth the time and money. There is only one new figure in this set, Lex Luthor. For those of us who grew up watching the Challenge of the Super Friends on TV, this is the Lex we always wanted.  The rest of the set are kit-bashes and repaints that are frankly disappointing.

Batman and Superman give us versions of the characters that most of have been asking for since Wave One of the DCUC line.  However, they are slated to be all stars in upcoming waves so they are not a huge draw

The two villains in the set are Catwoman and Two-Face. Catwoman does not resemble any comic version of her in the past, due to the mixing of her purple look and her modern costume.  This version looks more like her appearance in Mortal Combat vs. DC, though not as revealing. Catwoman, unlike the others in the set, comes with an accessory, her whip.  Two-Face, while a welcome and highly demanded repaint, is disappointing with no new parts, even with the new suit body from the Question (upcoming DCUC wave 11).  Not to mention the fact that he does not have the suit pattern continued down his pants, from his jacket.

Lex is mostly new and the highlight of the set.  He is made from a standard buck but has a whole new head, and for some of us the capsules on his costumes are removable. There are few iconic looks for characters and this one, along with the armored look from the DCSH line, make up two of the three looks that most collectors feel should be part of a line called DC Universe Classics. The final look is Lex in a business suit, and with the new suit body he can’t be far behind the other classics.

For most of us this set was a $54 Lex. I think there could have been better figures in this set, considering the real star of the set. I could have been happier with a Jump suit Riddler, or a correct height Sinestro, to help keep the costume theme going for the Legion of Doom. Giving us Cheetah and Toyman or a different Bizzaro would have also made this a better set. Mattel stated that this set was originally slated to be an all Batman set, and I could see Riddler or Poison Ivy rounding out the set, helping to complete the Gotham rogues without taking up space in the main line. All of these could have taken the place of Two Face and Catwoman, and most collectors would have been happy.  One of the larger problems with this set is the lack of accessories. At this price point, you are paying for five single carded figures, which usually come with a bunch of accessories in this line. It is unfortunate for collectors that there are no bat gadgets, no tech for Lex, and no guns for Two Face. I worry that some of us jumped on this set to get Lex and were excited about these “normal” Superman and Batman, but will be upset if the All-Star versions will have fun new accessories, and we will not want to buy them.

This set is a must have for the die hard fans, but those cherry picking the line are in a tough spot with this box set.
