Review: Iron Man 2- Movie Series

The movie line of Iron Man 2 gives fans something they missed in the first movie, figures in a smaller scale.  This line will not only give collectors and kids figures from the new movie, but also goes back and gives us all the great armors from the first movie.

Mark-One -

Mark One is small and bulky figure but does everything the first six inch figure we got about two years ago did. For such a solid figure he has a good amount of articulation. The details on him are also better than average for this figure. The figure has the same type of weathering of the comic version of the Mark-One armor. This figure looks like it stepped off the screen from the first movie, and is one figure that you should not skip, even with the all the other choices.

Mark- Two, Three, Four, and Six are all the same figure with different paint and small changes to parts and sculpt. The colors on all of them can make them hard to differentiate from each other. The only one that stands out and is my favorite of the bunch is the Mark-Two.This suit is bright, and the black lines that separate the panels on the armor are clean and make the figure pop. The other three are just the standard Iron Man armor, and unless you’re building an armory, pick you favorite and leave the rest.

The Mark-Five -

The suitcase suit is one that is much different than the rest.  It is much thinner than the other figures and it fits with the story on the back of the package.  This suit was built by Stark to be portable and easy to get on and off.  The reds contrast well with the silver that runs through the figure, and is a nice addition to the line.

Iron Monger-

This version is much too small for the rest of the line. While he fills the entire clam shell of the package, standing with the rest of the line he is out of scale.  The six inch figure from the first movie line is much more in scale with the rest of the Iron Man armors in the line. What is better about this versus the six inch version is the paint on this figure is far superior. The six inch version has a flat gray tone to it that made it look like a cheaper toy, while this one has subtle blue shading over parts and looks more like a suit of metal than a plastic toy. Even out of scale, this is worth picking up.

War Machine-

Again I have saved War Machine for the last spot in the review, and again it is because he is the most impressive. One of the few figures so far that is from the new movie, this figure has more details than the others in the line. The armor looks complex, and has levels that both the sculpt and the paint allow to stand out and not get lost in the plastic of the figure. There are usually too many parts on these armors that all have the same color, but this figure, through shading and sculpting, allows you to take in the whole figure and not think of him as a small plastic toy. There are small part numbers and writing on the armor which add to the realism of the figure. The shoulder pads are once again moveable and give the figure’s arms full range of motion. The shoulder guns, like the comic version, can go up and down and rotate. There is even a spot in the back to attach a string of bullets into the mini gun on the shoulder.

Overall, like most movie lines, we collectors are rabid to get our hands on them before they should be out, and have some buyer’s remorse after the toys go on clearance late in the summer.  As a movie line goes, the first offerings are well done, but the amount of similar armors is a bit much.  I skipped the Inferno armor and the light up Mark-Six cause I did not see any real differences other than a little color.  So happy hunting on this Iron Man Day 2010.
