Mezco Toyz revealed their Wolfman toys way back at Toy Fair 2009, and they have finally reached shelves nationwide along with the new movie in theaters now. There are two 7” figures and two deluxe 12” figures all based on the titular movie monster, and today we’re taking a look at one of the Deluxe 12” figures.
The 12” Wolfman is based on the beast as portrayed by Benicio Del Toro in the brand new movie, and features a fantastic likeness. The headsculpt captures the ferocious facial features of Del Toro’s Wolfman and really showcases the great character design by makeup artist Rick Baker. The rest of the figure doesn’t disappoint either—the figure is a rotocast, but still retains plenty of sculpted and painted detail for the fur and claws of the creature.

The Wolfman sports a torn cloth shirt and vest that is accurate to the movie design, and while I’m sometimes hesitant when toys mix soft goods along with plastic sculpting, the end result here is quite fantastic. The clothing hangs well and doesn’t look too bulky on the figure, and even matches well with the plastic sculpted pants on the figure’s lower half.

Articulation is another high point on this figure. With rotocast, it’s common for articulation to suffer, but not in this case—the Wolfman sports a ball jointed neck (with a great range of motion), a ball joint mid-ab crunch and another ball joint at the waist, ball jointed shoulders, swivel wrists, cut hips and cuts at the calf to adjust the feet. The upper body articulation is phenomenal, and allows for plenty of dynamic and cool-looking poses. While the limited lower body articulation isn’t as good as the upper body, it is still sculpted well enough to look good with any pose you want him to strike from the waist up.

The paints apps are perfect, with plenty of detailing going into the fur and especially the face and eyes. Since I’ve seen the movie, I obviously picked up the bloody variant of this figure, which has plenty of blood spattered on both the plastic figure and the cloth shirt. The effect is plentiful, but isn’t overdone, and looks quite accurate to the messiness of the monster in the movie after he runs across an unfortunate victim (or more than one, as is often the case).

As I said previously, the Deluxe Wolfman is available in both bloody and non-bloody versions, and the 7” figure (which is all-plastic, no cloth shirt) is likewise available with and without blood spatter, as well as different headsculpts—either open or closed mouth.

Both versions of the Wolfman are now available at mezcotoyz.com, as well as specialty retail stores and Toys ‘R Us. If you’re a fan of the movie-- or cool takes on the classic Universal monster movies in general—pick this guy up, you won’t be disappointed!
