When a game advertises itself as a spiritual successor to the legendary Gradius, shooter fans are bound to take notice. After all, in the mid eighties, vertical and side-scrolling shooters ruled coin-op arcades and Gradius was among the best. Enter Otomedius Excellent which, while aping the old-school formula, shows us how far games in this genre have evolved. Continue reading “Otomedius Excellent is the Breast Shooter Around” »
Hasbro’s Mighty Muggs made a 100% Pure Awesome return this Summer at SDCC, and the return continued with the new Maximum Carnage exclusive set at New York Comic Con! The new set of mini-Muggs features our favorite web-slinging super hero Spider-Man, along with some of his most dangerous foes– Venom, Carnage, Demogoblin… and perhaps his most hated enemy of all, J. Jonah Jameson! Thanks to our friends at Hasbro, we got the chance to check out this awesome new set!

The first two entries in the Max Payne series remain some of my favorite games of all time – specifically because of the excellent narratives that they were built around. Developer Remedy Entertainment had really nailed their execution of a modern film noir story. Told through a series of graphic novel styled frames, Max’s gravelly voiceover was present throughout and nearly every word he spoke was dripping with metaphor and cynicism. When it was announced that Max Payne 3, the first new entry to the series in over eight years, would also be the first title in not developed by Remedy or written by creator Sam Lake, it seemed unfortunately apparent that the series wouldn’t be the same.

There were a lot of major panels at New York Comic Con, but the biggest by far was the Marvel Sudios panel for The Avengers! The movie, coming to theaters next Summer, is the culmination of six years of films, bringing together such comic book (and now cinematic) heroes such as Iron-Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor along with newcomers such as Hawkeye and Black Widow in the ultimate comic book team-up movie. The panel saw the first big-screen presentation of the brand new Avengers trailer, as well as an exclusive first look at a scene from the film… and featured much of the cast of the super hero movie live to answer questions from fans!

After all these years, the most iconic cartoon idiots of all time are returning to TV– Beavis and Butt-head returns to MTV on October 27th! To celebrate the grand return, creator Mike Judge made an appearance at New York Comic Con, where he answered questions and even aired the premiere episode to a packed room of diehard fans!

Boston-based Demiurge Studios is currently known for their supporting roles in developing games like BioShock & Mass Effect and, in early 2012, they will be unleashing their first original title, “Shoot Many Robots” – the most aptly named video game of all time, to Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC. I had the opportunity to preview the game with Senior Designer Josh Glavine at New York Comic Con and was not disappointed. Players assume the role of P. Walter Tugnut, a tough-as-nails redneck on a mission to shut down the robot-producing factories after surviving the automaton uprising.

Perennial Comic Con favorites Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer– and their little show called Venture Bros– were back for their hometown Con again this year, and they sat down to talk about everything from writing the upcoming Season Five, to what they’d like to see in an inevitable (someday) reboot of the show, with all the inappropriate language and obscure pop culture references you’d expect from the guys behind the funniest cartoon ever. See what Jackson and Doc had to say at NYCC this year…

When I first heard about Eagleheart, the Adult Swim action spoof starring Chris Elliott, I geeked out– here’s the weirdest, funniest network on television, combined with one of the funniest, weirdest actors of all time! If you haven’t seen it, the resulting show is every bit as awesome as it should be, as Elliott’s US Marshal Chris Monsanto punches, kicks and shoots his way to solving cases week after week! We had the chance to sit down with Chris, co-stars Brett Gelman and Maria Thayer, and show creators Michael Koman and Jason Woliner at New York Comic Con to discuss what’s coming up on Season Two.. check it out!

For the first time ever, Hasbro came in full force to New York Comic Con. Hasbro has a huge booth at NYCC, featuring some awesome convention exclusives, along with showcases for brand new products for each of their lines, from Star Wars and GI Joe to Transformers and Jem… and of course Marvel! We got the chance to chat with some of the Marvel design team at Hasbro, and got some inside details on Marvel Legends, Marvel universe and more!

At this point, hopefully you’ve heard of Attack The Block. The incredible sci-fi/ action/ comedy from first time British director Joe Cornish hosted a panel at New York Comic Con, as well as a screening of the film at the Museum of Modern Art earlier this week. I had a chance to sit down with Joe to talk about his amazing movie, and the experience of hitting a cinematic home run on his first time out directing a feature film.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American Air Force squad, who flew over 1,500 missions across Europe during World War II. The story of the Red Tails, named for the distinct coloring of their legendary P-51 Mustangs, has been a personal project of Star Wars creator George Lucas for two decades, and this story will finally make its way to the big screen next January. Lucasfilm hosted a panel at New York Comic Con all about the epic action film, featuring the film’s co-writer Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks), actors Michael B. Jordan and Leslie Odom, Jr. and real-life Tuskegee Airman Dr. Roscoe Brown! The panel discussed the movie– and the real life history behind this American hero story, and unveiled some brand new footage and a great new poster for the film… Check it out now!

Norman Reedus is a bad ass guy. He’s been one of my favorite cinematic tough guys since he played Murphy MacManus in The Boondock Saints, and when I heard last year he had been cast in AMC’s TV series The Walking Dead, I knew right away it would be awesome. His character on the show, Daryl Dixon lived up to my expectations… Easily the meanest and toughest of the survivors we’ve met so far, the arrow-happy loner is one of the most compelling new characters introduced in the TV series.
I had the chance to chat with Norman about Series Two of The Walking Dead, which premieres on AMC. Check out what he had to say about where Daryl and the other survivors are heading this season, how he got the role, and what his favorite zombie was on the new season!

MTV’s new animation isn’t all about the return of Beavis and Butt-head… premiering this Thursday night is their other brand-new animated comedy Good Vibes. Good Vibes is the surf-soaked story of two beach buds, transplanted Jersy native Mondo and his new best friend Woodie, and it’s a hilarious coming of age storythat harkens back to the smart writing and raunchy comedy of early Simpsons. I had the chance to see the premiere episode at New York Comic Con, and also chat with the cast and creator David Gordon Green about the new animated series… check it out!

McFarlane Toys is running an interesting experiment with their Walking Dead toys, releasing both a set based on the original Robert Kirkman comics, and a set based on the AMC TV show. Continue reading “The Walking Dead TV Series Gets The Toy Treatment” »
We’re still celebrating The Walking Dead week, in anticipation of this weekend’s premiere of The Walking Dead season 2 on AMC this Sunday at 10pm! Yesterday we took a look at Rick Grimes and Michonne from McFarlane Toys’ The Walking Dead Comic Series One, but what would survivors of the zombie apocalypse be without some undead creatures to fight? Series One of the excellent new toy line has us covered with two zombies, each with some totally nasty (and completely FUN) action features! Let’s take a look at the Zombie Roamer and Zombie Lurker…
