Comics Korner: Week of 3/7/2012

March is off to an incredibly strong start with this week’s comic line-up.  Among Swamp Thing’s triumphant return, Spider-Man’s continued shenanigans in space and the new DC logo, there was plenty to like (or in that logo’s case, to be pretty ambivalent towards).  Read on to find out exactly what made this week so awesome!

There Should Really Be A John Carter Toy Line

Not only was Disney’s John Carter an excellent movie, but it was also filled with more “toy-etic” designs than any other big budget movie in recent memory. With iconic heroes and villains, a huge and lavish world from which to pull inspiration, and a strong sense of cinematic design, John Carter seems like a sure-fire hit on toy shelves. But no company bit for the first movie… let’s take a look at why (along with some fan-casting fun) as I propose the line I think would be incredible.

John Carter is Pulpy Sci-Fi That Really Works

Disney’s John Carter is an exciting adaptation of the classic pulp fiction series that does justice to the Mars novels as well as big-budget sci-fi epics. With a cast of wonderfully realized characters, a great sense of visual style all its own, and some fantastic effects, it’s taken a hundred years to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ creation to the big screen, and this movie makes it worth the wait.

21 Jump Street is a Worthy Addition to the Reboot Craze

21 Jump Street is the latest in a long line of classic TV shows being re-imagined for the big screen, and the new take on the “old school” undercover cop story sends up the original show– and the buddy cop genre– with just the right mix of raunch, meta jokes, action and comedy, and the result may be the funniest and most entertaining retro reboot since Land of the Lost.

Jackie’s Back With Some New Tricks in Darkness II

When Starbreeze Studios released The Darkness on consoles in 2007, they successfully breathed new life into an aging license. Now, five years later, the sequel sports a new developer, a reworked control scheme, and radically new visuals. The result capitalizes on the strengths of the original source material while providing, for the most part, an extremely entertaining experience.

Marvel Legends Has Returned

It’s been a long time coming– Hasbro first announced that they were bringing back Marvel Legends almost two years ago and they have now made good on that promise with the first new wave of figures hitting retail now. Marvel Legends were aptly named, as the much-revered toy line revolutionized the 6″ toy market, and I couldn’t be happier to report that the latest installment to the series stands among the best of them.

DC Universe wave 20 brings to a close the five-year line, which has delivered plenty of ups and downs, along with a very impressive collection of comic-style superheroes and villains. Starting our three-part look at the final wave of DC Universe Classics, we’re taking a look at two of the “bright” points in this Brightest Day themed wave… the all-new Green Arrow and classic Red Arrow. How do these archers compare to the previous bow-wielding heroes we’ve seen?
