Developer Telltale Games is no stranger to building experiences around licensed material, but this time they’ve outdone themselves. The Walking Dead: A New Day has just been released for XBLA, PSN, & PC/Mac and I loved every minute of it. Based directly within the canon of Robert Kirkman’s comic series, Telltale’s take on the franchise is an unexpected dose of drama that succeeds in all the places that AMC’s television series fell flat. In less than three hours, this introductory episode (the first of five) has sold me on the new cast of characters while seamlessly working some familiar ones into a tightly-knit, intense narrative. The result is an outstanding piece of storytelling that every Walking Dead fan needs to experience.

Every so often, a game comes around that’s so intriguing, so deeply immersive, that feels real. Only through the talent of the most masterful writers, voice actors, designers and developers can this feat be achieved. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a shining example of the intense experience a video game can offer. Immediately upon witnessing the newly-crafted cutscene that opens the title I was hooked and now, dozens of hours into the game, that feeling hasn’t let up. It pulls no punches and won’t hold your hand – a hardcore gamer’s game through and through – delivering the greatest action/RPG experience I’ve had since the original Mass Effect.

The new season of Mad Men continues to charge forward, packing some dense and heavy character studies into what has been a flat-out brilliantly written and beautifully realized season. From a dabble into horror two weeks back to last week’s heartbreaking spotlight on Pete and Lane, I keep expecting the bottom to fall out on just how good this show is, but I’m starting to this that shoe is nowhere near falling– in fact this week’s “Far Away Places” may have been the most compelling and entertaining episode of the season.

I know, I know, this isn’t a music review site. We’ve never highlighted any musical acts before and likely won’t again, but this is a special occasion – Miami-based outfit, Torche, released their new full-length LP today and I’d be doing our readers a disservice not to recommend it. Now, in general, music is an extremely subjective thing and, with so many choices and endless lists of sub-genres out there, it can be tough to gauge what people will respond well to. But Torche is the one band that I always find myself recommending to people without any inkling of their individual tastes. The body of work they’ve created has a universal appeal that deserves a spot in everyone’s collection. I could be off the mark but, if you’re not already familiar with the band, give them a listen and see if you don’t agree.
