I got even more excited for Toy Fair today, as Mezco Toyz revealed they will be releasing Breaking Bad merchandise, some of which will be revealed at the show next February. Mezco is a great fit for the AMC series, and I’m pretty excited by some of the items Mezco hints are coming in 2013.
Like many of Mezco’s properties, it looks like their Breaking Bad merch will be all over the place, the license covering everything from action figures and Mez-Itz, to bobbleheads, accessories and plushes (!!!). Mezco hasn’t had a major TV property since Heroes, but as usual that line featured some stellar craftsmanship and made for some great toys.
TV toys can be tricky, even when they have the pedigree of Breaking Bad behind them, with so many characters looking like normal people. It’s killed other lines like LOST, where a wildly popular cult series just didn’t survive in the toy aisle because the figures, quite frankly, looked boring. Breaking Bad has one major win in its corner– intentionally normal-looking Walter would make a striking toy in his cook suit.
And this property seems like a great fit for Mezco’s sometimes-frustrating pattern of limiting character selection. Would I kill to have action figures of Gus and Mike Ehrmantraut on my shelf? Absolutely! But truth be told, even if we only got Walt and Jesse (likely the first two figures, I’d assume), it would be enough to feel complete.
Really, I’m just hoping each figure includes a little toy-sized baggie of Blue Sky, like the Kerium crystals packed with all the Marshall Bravestarr figures back in the 80’s…
