The Stars Don’t Align in the Masters of the Universe

The Star Sisters arrived, and in my review, I will be taking a different approach than normal. I would point out the limitations and weigh the pros and cons, but these girls come with quite a few strikes already. These girls are She-Ra Princess of Power concept characters, and were released in January as a $66 box set. In a line where some folks finally warmed up to the idea of having noteworthy additions such as Frosta, Castaspella, and Glimmer in their collections, three Z-Listers in a costly set wearing garish colors not resembling their actual toy prototypes, with very little in the way of real accessories, moved to the front of the line.

Lions, Snakes, and The Horde Oh My….Pt 3

The Griffin rounds out the June offerings in a big way. He is Battle Cat’s body, with a new head, tail, bird-like hind feet, saddle, and upper body piece that houses Swift Wind’s flying wings. With quite a bit of lead time in front of them, fans lobbied for his wings to not be completely one color, as seen on the original prototype.

Lions, Snakes, and The Horde Oh My….Pt 2

With no definitive representation of Horde Prime’s appearance, the Four Horsemen were tasked with coming up with his new look, while using bucks, as previously done in the old line. Continue reading “Lions, Snakes, and The Horde Oh My….Pt 2” »

Lions, Snakes, and The Horde Oh My….Pt 1

For Masters of the Universe Classics, June has provided us with three first-time action figures for Snake Man-At-Arms, galactic overlord Horde Prime, and Beast-Man’s resilient griffin beasts. While the selection may be comprised of niche characters and variants with more reused tooling than we’d like, I personally enjoy the spirit of these characters and the winning final representation of the collaboration between the company and the consumer.  Continue reading “Lions, Snakes, and The Horde Oh My….Pt 1” »

The Horde Grows By One and a Half

September gives us two new Masters of the Universe Classics figures, and both of them come from the same faction! The Horde has been building nicely with Hordak, Grizzlor, and Force Captain Catra. The energy-draining Leech and the quarterly variant Hurricane Hordak join them. Each come with their own pluses and minuses, but let’s see how the scales tip, overall. MOTU Vykron Is A Dressed-Up Mess

Vykron, being a dress-up set memorializing the original pitch for what became Masters of the Universe, was a very appropriate and ambitious set for the 30th anniversary. The tank armor, the viking garb, and space man attire can each be applied to a base body to create unique looks for a new character: Vykron, the Ultimate Eternian Champion. Is this $30 set greater than the sum of his front-covering parts?

SDCC 2012- Warner Archive Panel

At the request of a friend, I attended the Warner Archive panel that was debuting the Shazam! Series on DVD. I make no bones about it: I went entirely to get a Shazam Lego for my friend. I was even brazen enough to ask the moderator what I had to do to get one. He would only say that it would be great to ask a good question at the end of the panel presentation. I sat down and what played before me was Chuck Norris: Karate Commandos. Still unsure of the hour that laid ahead of me, the folks at Warner Archive were introduced and my reluctance in attending became an appreciation for their work and a desire to rekindle my fondness of cartoons gone by. SDCC 2012- Jr.’s Hasbro Marvel Panel Report

Attending the Hasbro Marvel panel was supposed to be a swan song of sorts. With an ever-expanding toy collection, I came to the realization that I don’t read the modern comics anymore. The Super Helicarrier was amazing but just impossible to send home. Continue reading “SDCC 2012- Jr.’s Hasbro Marvel Panel Report” »

SDCC 2012- Mattypallooza

The energy was high at the Mattypallooza panel this year, with all-new reveals, surprises, and even a new subcription series! There was a lot of chatter going into the event. The Create-a-Character winner was accidentally revealed on the Mattycollector website, deflating an otherwise impressive showing. Also in question was the status of properties like Voltron and Ghostbusters, and the advent of the new property. Scott and co. did their best to keep the energy high, and the panel gave fans a lot to talk about. Continue reading “SDCC 2012- Mattypallooza” »
