Bethesda hit PAX East full force this year. Their booth had a commanding presence as a gigantic screen running a looped Elder Scrolls Online trailer stopped con-goers dead in their tracks and throngs of gamers queued up to catch a few minutes of hands-on time with the upcoming title.

Fans at this year’s PAX East waited hours upon hours outside of Ubisoft’s enormous multi-theater display to catch a glimpse of their Watch Dogs presentation. The game has plenty of buzz circulating it and with good reason — Watch Dogs looks to be one of the most creative and ambitious video game titles in years.

Japanime games ran a rather non-descript booth at this year’s PAX East with a minimal setup featuring two styles of playmats for use with their popular Tanto Cuore games, a physical copy of the upcoming Krosmaster Arena which is currently up on Kickstarter, and a table demoing their brand new release, Kanzume Goddess.

Rockstar Games’ booth at PAX East 2012 was host to a slick visual design, thumping house beats, piles of swag and, most importantly, a playable build of a game that I’ve been anticipating for nearly a decade: Max Payne 3. As such, that was my very first stop at this year’s convention and I’m happy to say that it didn’t disappoint– in fact, any doubt that I had in my mind after Rockstar’s brief presentation at NYCC 2011 is now gone, replaced with joy and anticipation. 2K Games outdid themselves at PAX East 2012, preparing not only an awesome preview of their upcoming Spec Ops: The Line, but also a playable build of one of this year’s most anticipated titles, Borderlands 2. We were able to go hands-on with a demo of Gearbox’s soon-to-be-blockbuster and can tell you that it’s already shaping up to be one hell of a shooter — employing all the stylish flair and fast-paced action that made its predecessor so memorable while refining nearly every aspect of the first game’s winning formula.

The sight of droves of PAX East attendees carrying around inflatable tomahawks could only mean one thing– Assassin’s Creed III had arrived. Ubisoft had an enormous black booth set up for the game with nothing on the outside but the crest of the Assassin Order and the roman numerals “III”. Inside the booth was a gameplay video that showed off many new aspects of the title that players can look forward to. Even though it’s still a work in progress, the gameplay looked incredibly polished and it seems like Ubisoft Montreal are making some serious changes for the better.

Tucked away in a corner of the PAX East expo floor sat Reverb Communication’s booth, which was filled with playable demos of upcoming Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network releases. Black Knight Sword, developed by the eclectic Suda 51’s studio Grasshopper Manufacture and Digital Reality, stood out as one of the craziest. We played through an early level of the bizarre 2D platformer with a Reverb rep by our sides and were left with a very positive impression.

Away from the hustle & bustle and unpleasant odors of the crowded expo floor at PAX East, in Square Enix’s private suite, we were among the first to get an intimate glimpse of Hitman: Absolution’s gameplay. Developed by IO Interactive, the newest title in the Hitman franchise retains the series’ signature stealth mechanics while introducing new features that are sure to appeal to a much wider audience. Make no mistake– Agent 47 is back and better than ever.

Square Enix had an incredible showing at this year’s PAX East. Attendees and press were offered glimpses and hands-on time with many of the most anticipated titles coming from the ubiquitous publisher this year. One of the most immediately impressive titles on display was Sleeping Dogs, a third-person action game that puts the player in the shoes of an undercover cop traversing the gritty streets of Hong Kong. We were able to sit down with producer Dan Sochan, who led us through a playable demo and offered glimpses of what to look forward to when the game launches later this year. Spec Ops: The Line sees the return of the long-running series and its first foray into the modern generation of consoles (the last title was Spec Ops: Airborne Commando back in 2002). Publisher 2K’s impressive military themed booth– complete with a post-apocalyptic bus– contained a lengthy single-player demo of the game that offered players a glimpse of its realistic third-person combat and engaging story. We went hands-on with the game, spoke with the lead writer Walt Williams and Survival Expert Reggie to find out everything we could about this promising new military-themed shooter from Yager Development.
