Set in an alternate-history timeline in which Germany not only wins World War II, but goes on to systematically conquer the entire world, longtime series protagonist BJ Blaskowicz has his work cut out for him in Wolfenstein: The New Order. Far outshining previous attempts to modernize the franchise, developer MachineGames absolutely knocked it out of the park here, delivering a campy and wildly entertaining love letter to the classic that started it all.

Newly updated as a universal app on iOS, TownCraft is the first effort from Australian developer Flat Earth Games. Taking cues from titles such as Animal Crossing and MineCraft, it drops players into an expansive landscape with their only guides being a simple objective and a lot of creativity.

The booth that 2K had set up for their AAA title, Evolve, at PAX East may have commanded the most attention and attracted the longest lines at the convention. Whether it was to get a bit of play time in at their thoroughly well-designed gaming stations or simply for a photo opportunity with their enormous monster statue, fans swarmed to the booth non-stop the entire weekend.

One of several playable titles being shown off by Ubisoft at PAX East was The Crew, an open-world racing title which combines arcade-style driving action with large-scale multiplayer and role-playing elements. After spending a bit of time with the current build of the game though, I left with mixed feelings.

Developed by Square Enix Montreal, Hitman GO was likely the biggest surprise on the floor at this year’s PAX East. When a Hitman mobile game was first announced, many were likely a bit apprehensive that the medium simply couldn’t properly capture the nuance of the beloved franchise. The playable build on the convention floor shattered all expectations however, delivering an elegant, unique take on Hitman that fans can truly appreciate.
