UPDATE: Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was officially confirmed by Marvel Studios during their panel at Comic Con. The new movie is set to be released July 28th, 2017.
James Gunn signed on to direct two movies for Marvel, the first being next week’s Guardians of the Galaxy. And now it appears as though his second film for the studio will be a sequel. That’s a pretty big deal– the movie isn’t even out yet (despite pulling an early perfect 100% on review aggreggators), and now it looks as though we’re getting a sequel AND the same director back on board.
It’s great news, because Gunn is a fantastic talent, and Guardians is very, very good. He proved he has an excellent handle on this source material, making his film completely cool even at its most out there (and believe me, Guardians pushes boundaries in ways that no other Marvel film has, in regards to generally geek-worthy content).
Also, while Guardians actually feels satisfyingly self-contained as a story, it ends by setting up what comes next for this ragtag team, and there’s some neat character arcs left open ended, which could be really cool to see pay off in the future. And even with all the cool cosmic stuff Gunn packed into his movie (seamlessly, I might add), there’s lots more intergalactic territory left unexplored in the Marvel universe, and I’m already hungry for more.
News of Gunn on board comes from Variety, and if it’s true will likely be confirmed tonight at the big Marvel panel at Comic Con. I am so okay with this!
