NYCC 2017: A Discussion With Team Marvel From Hasbro

New Legends reveals! New hope for Professor X’s hoverchair? And what are the odds we’ll see new toys based on the X-Men movie universe? Let’s find out…

Hasbro’s Marvel team hosted a special press event off site at New York Comic Con, revealing several new Marvel Legends including Prowler, Spider-Man Noir, Gladiator, Multiple Man, and Taskmaster. This completes the lineups for 2018’s Deadpool and Spider-Man waves, and adds to the ranks of the X-Men and Avengers waves.

Also on display was some new product for Black Panther (though no new Legends were revealed for that line), and the upcoming Walgreens exclusive Reed Richards, who will include swappable standard arms and extended, bendy versions. Reed will be released early next year, after Medusa, and will be followed by The Thing, completing the core Fantastic Four team.

That means, as of now, this is the 2018 Marvel Legends roster:

Spider-Man Legends – The Lizard Series

  • Spider-Punk (with all new guitar pick hand)
  • Spider-Man Noir
  • Lasher
  • Spider-Woman
  • Spider-Gwen
  • Mysterio
  • Prowler

Deadpool Legends – Sasquatch Series

  • Deadpool (90s)
  • Cable (90s)
  • Domino
  • X-23
  • Paladin
  • Deathlok

X-Men Legends – Apocalypse Series

  • Storm (mohawk)
  • Psylocke (with psychic weapons)
  • Wolverine
  • Gladiator
  • Multiple Man (with two alternate heads to diversify army building)

Black Panther Legends – ??? Series

  • Namor
  • Black Bolt
  • Iron-Man (ANAD)

Avengers Legends – ??? Series

  • King Cobra
  • Songbird
  • Taskmaster (classic)

Our group also had the chance for an in depth Q&A with the team. We talked about the past, present, and future of the toy line, which left me more excited than ever about the state of Legends.

Some interesting notes:

-Now that the Fantastic Four are on the verge of being released, Negative Zone and Future Foundation variants are definitely “on the table.”

-Selecting movie/ TV versus comic characters is always a balancing act, and the process is very involved when finding the right mix to please everyone. They use their tooling wisely, as the movie figures are generally all new sculpts each time. The Hasbro crew works very closely with Marvel when choosing which movie characters to focus on, as well as looking at the characters they didn’t do. They are aware some past characters need to be done, they’re just looking at the right place to release them. Nebula and Yondu are perfect examples; it took a few years, but both were just released in the second wave of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 figures.

-Until now, there has been a hard line drawn in the sand against including movie or TV figures based on Fox’s X-Men properties. While this is still the case, the Hasbro team expressed a lot of interest in working toward creating figures based on the X-movies. In the meantime, we may see more nods to what’s going on in the mutant mass media, like releasing a potential comic style Blink in tandem with her appearance on Gifted.

-When discussing the future of the new vehicles series, Hasbro explicitly brought up Professor Xavier’s hoverchair and asked us what we thought of that as a vehicle set.

-Hasbro is aware of the “swapping” (AKA stealing) issue with the current window box packaging, and are considering options to help prevent theft while also maintaining an appealing display style.

-The retro 90s “Silver Card” series is just starting to hit retailers. The other most iconic packaging from the early days of Toy Biz is the orange toned X-Men card. If the current retro series sells well, they would love to do a follow up inspired by the retro X-Men packaging. One of the Hasbro team members has even sketched out what that card art would look like for the current 6″ Legends.

-Choosing which look a character will be based on is just as complicated a decision as choosing the character in the first place. But once a character is chosen, all their most important looks are factored into the equation, with the goal of releasing them all eventually. Cable is a great example; the X-Men Legends version released a few years ago opted for a modern look, but Hasbro always knew they would tackle the 90s/ Liefeld Cable as well, who will see release in the Deadpool wave.

Let’s ponder all this intriguing new information while perusing some up-close, in hand photos of the newest Marvel Legends reveals below!
