NYCC 2012: On the Floor with Square Enix/Play Arts Kai

Square Enix/Play Arts Kai were at this year’s New York Comic Con in full force, showing off a great mix of previously released figures, newly painted prototypes, and a few great surprises.  They even trumped their lackluster SDCC Arkham Asylum exclusives with a sick metallic red version of Metal Gear Solid’s Cybernetic Ninja, available only at the con.  Check out a rundown of their new reveals and photo gallery.

Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut Reviewed

By all rights, Mass Effect 3 should have been the gaming experience of a lifetime – the culmination of hundreds of hours spent, not only playing a game, but absorbing a world rich in established lore and complex characters.  Instead, gamers were subjected to a jarringly disappointing end to the trilogy rife with plot holes, self-contradictions, and lazy writing.  Fan outcry regarding the abysmal finale sequence specifically caused developer BioWare to announce that an extended cut of the game was in the works that would provide more closure and attempt to explain away some of the gaping plot holes.  Now that it’s out, let’s take a detailed look.

Pre-Orders are Up for New Mass Effect 3 Collectibles

Today, both TriForce and Square Enix announced Q4 2012 release dates for their new Mass Effect 3-themed pieces.  Don’t let that stop you from getting your pre-orders in early, though — historically, both companies work with rather limited runs that tend to sell out quickly and, considering the popularity of the source material along with the fact that they all look awesome, these won’t likely last long.

Mass Effect 3 Inaction Figures: Series 1 & 2 Review

Distributed by DC Direct and originally slated for a Summer 2010 release, the first series of Mass Effect action figures suffered one delay after another with a small assortment sneaking onto shelves in April 2011 before disappearing completely.  Frustrated with DC’s handling of the line, Bioware pulled the plug on their partnership and later announced they would be working with Big Fish Toys to revive the initial run of four figures as well as a second series.  This week, all eight 6.8” action figures from Bioware & Big Fish Toys are beginning to ship to customers who had pre-ordered and, in keeping with the Mass Effect 3 namesake, are a colossal disappointment.

PAX East 2012: Bioware and the Fine Art of Question Dodging

As I’ve stated previously, my main focus at PAX East was to attend Bioware’s panel and voice my concerns, questioning their relentlessly poor handling of Mass Effect 3’s endgame. Attend I did, but the answers we’re in short supply.  Here’s a brief rundown of the much-hyped panel for anyone who missed it.

PAX East 2012: On the Floor with Triforce

Among the maze of crowded booths, flashing LCD displays, and booming soundsystems, Triforce’s elegantly subtle presentation demanded the attention of passers-by. Being unveiled to the public for the first time were several new prop collectibles straight from some of your favorite games. To say these pieces looked amazing would be a gross understatement and, while photos can’t do them justice, we have shots and impressions of each one.

Mass Effect 3’s Campaign Falls Short of Expectations

Mass Effect 3 hit shelves earlier this month to record hype– the fervor emanating from Bioware’s rabid fanbase was almost insurmountable. I personally was dizzy with excitement on March 5th just waiting for the hours to run down to 12am so I could speed home and begin a marathon playthrough of the game that would no doubt be regarded as one of the greatest works of science fiction ever produced. This is, after all, the culmination of hundreds of hours of intense gaming over the course of five years– an epic finale for the cast of characters gamers have come to love so much.
