TMNT Bebop & Rocksteady Go Old School

The new “Wanted: Bebop and Rocksteady” toys from Playmates are the best repaints they’ve ever done.

Sadly, we’re in the final months of the current incarnation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and while the Nickelodeon show has been telling some interesting stories in the last few arcs of the series, Playmates has been following suit with a mix of new figures and stylized repaints of some classics released over the past few years.

Bebop and Rocksteady split the difference with their latest toy releases, which are based on the Nickelodeon era villains decked out in their vintage 80s costumes.  For the most part, these guys are straight repaints of the previous Bebop and Rocksteady, but in new colors that match their 1980s costumes. But each includes some cool overlay pieces which tweak their appearance just enough to make them feel unique.

Rocksteady now sports some rubber combat boots, as well as a familiar turtle shell helmet. Aside from that, he’s the same sculpt filled with awesome detail, but suffering from limited articulation, especially the cut shoulders which would really benefit from a ball joint. Bebop gets his chain belt and ammo bandolier, as well as a turtle shell shoulder pad, just like the original.  His articulation is way better than Rocksteady’s, which is cool… though both figures still feel a tad too small in comparison to the Turtles.

I’m an 80s kid, through and through, so these outfits were always my favorite for Bebop and Rocksteady. I’m blown away how cool their modern designs look in these colors, and how original both figures feel with just a little bit of new paint and some clever added pieces. 80s Bebop and Rocksteady are available now, along with Leonardo in an 80s style trench coat.  Sadly, they’ll probably be the final Tales of the TMNT figures to be released, but figures as good as this Bebop and Rocksteady mean this great collection is absolutely going out on a high note.
