Toy Fair 2014: Dark Horse

Dark Horse @ NYTF2014

Dark Horse had a tremendous floor presence at this year’s Toy Fair.  With less focus on blind boxed minis and smaller collectibles than in previous years, their new lines – specifically their outstanding Game of Thrones items — commanded the attention of attendees.

Anyone who has seen the first wave of the Game of Thrones vinyl figures/statues already knows how fantastic they look but, if you’re new to the line, take a look at the gallery images.  Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, have already been released while Tyrion Lannister, Khal Drogo, and Eddard Stark, who are also part of the first wave, will be shipping within the next few weeks.  Wave Two will consist of Arya Stark, Cersei Baratheon, Jaime Lannister, Robb Stark, and a White Walker and will tentatively ship in August.  The likenesses of the series’ actors, the detail in their sculpts, and the paint apps are all incredible, especially when you consider the $24.99 price point — I really expected the MSRP to be higher for these pieces.

That’s not to say they didn’t give Games of Thrones the deluxe treatment on items for the serious collector though.  Their Hound bust looks amazing, nailing the character’s signature look and sculpted wearing the armor that he made his first appearance in on the show.  The ominous helmet he wears is even hinged to open and close, which is a very cool added bonus.  The Hound will see his release in July for about $150.  Next up is a full body statue of Arya Stark.  Brandishing her iconic sword, Needle, she wears a fierce scowl and stands atop a beautiful forested base.  Arya should be available in June for a reasonable $225.  Dark Horse was also showing off an awesome Weirwood Tree snowglobe.  I would have never thought a snowglobe based on the license would have worked, but they chose the perfect content for it, resulting in a really elegant piece. It’s also very limited, with only 1200 pieces being manufactured.  The biggest surprise though, was the set of Map Markers and Map.  While the map of Westeros wasn’t available to view, the polyresin markers looked unbelievably cool.  These sizable pieces depict the symbols/colors associated with the many houses we’ve come to know and love…or hate.  They’ll actually be released rather soon, in March, and I really can’t wait to see how the map look as well.  It’ll run $200 but it could be the greatest decoration my dining room table has ever seen.

Moving onto other properties, Dark Horse continues to release stellar looking ship models based on the Mass Effect franchise.  The newly-released Turian Cruiser retails for $34.99 and June will see the release of the Alliance Cruiser in both a standard and limited Silver Edition for $44.99 and $59.99 respectively.  An Alliance Shuttle will follow shortly after for $39.99.  Attendees also got a sneak peek of the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess figures of Link and Ganondorf.  Both will be released this summer and couldn’t look better.  Link stands 10” tall, outfitted with his iconic gear, and will retail for $79.99.  Ganondorf is a hulking 12” figure and will sport a $124.99 MSRP when released this July.  Fans of the license with some extra coin to burn will be salivating over these for sure.

To coincide with Dark Horse Comics’ Itty Bitty Hellboy series, Dark Horse was also showing off their adorable plush Hellboy and Abe Sapien dolls.  Releasing this month and available for $14.99, they’re undeniably cute.  For just under $50 each, they are also releasing the Marvel Classic Character line of X-Men #94.  Starting in June with the release of Storm, the line will continue with Wolverine in July, Cyclops in August, and finally Nightcrawler in September.  Colossus and Banshee will be following at some point after that.  The retro styling and classic appeal of these guys really make them stand out in Dark Horse’s otherwise very flashy lineup.

Lastly, their display included some of their currently available items from the Grimm franchise – a Nick Burkhardt Bust, great looking Key & Coin replica pins, as well as pint and shot glasses.  Overall, this was one of the best showings I’ve seen from Dark Horse.  While I missed seeing some of my favorites (the Treasure Troll line is finished and Domo will be wrapping up with series 5), their newest lines and one-off collectibles were among my most anticipated items for 2014.
