ReAction is the other big new avenue for Funko, based on the smash hit Alien ReAction figures they released in 2013 with Super7. Funko is being incredibly ambitious with this new format, launching a dozen properties in the first year alone. The concept here is great– throwback figures that feature 5 points of articulation and share a style with the vintage 80s Kenner toys such as Star Wars. The execution is just as good, because these little guys all looked great!
The licenses range from 80s classics like Back to the Future, Escape From New York, Predator and The Goonies, to more modern cult icons like Pulp Fiction, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. Each series will feature great retro card art and a coffin bubble like the old 80s figures, and will each retail for only $10, making these a true dream come true for collectors.
Entertainment Earth revealed the lineups a few weeks back, but seeing them all in person made me even more excited for this incredibly cool new line. The Funko display at Toy Fair also revealed some fun new features within the line, including chase figures. The Universal Monsters will feature hard to find chase versions of the Creature From the Black Lagoon and The Mummy which glow in the dark, while Spike from Buffy will get a vampire variant and Jayne from Firefly will feature a second figure with his knit cap.
There was a lot to get excited for at Toy Fair, but Funko really zeroed in on exactly what collectors are looking for. Their new figures are equally great to look at and fun, and I remain impressed by the sheer audacity of launching both ReAction and Legacy in such a big way. It’s a bold move, but when the products look this good, I’m confident it’s going to pay off for Funko in a major way.
