Hrm, I can honestly say I don’t know how I feel about the casting of WWE personality Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer in James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. I dropped out of wrestling around the time Bautista was coming up, but from what I’ve heard he’s less Rock and more Triple H, but I don’t think I’ve seen this guy act in anything so I’m certainly no expert (I’m still actively avoiding the disappointment of seeing his last movie, the RZA-directed Man With the Iron Fists).
Bautista was up against seemingly better choices such as Conan/ Game of Thrones actor Jason Mamoa and Old Spice huckster Isaiah Mustafa. While from my vantage point Bautista seems like the first potential misstep this movie has taken, I’m perfectly willing to eat crow when/ if I am proven wrong. I have a lot of confidence in James Gunn as being the perfect director for the big time space epic, and that confidence was only boosted when Chris Pratt was announced as our hero, Star Lord. And Marvel Studios hasn’t made a bad choice in their casting thus far, so my hope is they saw something in Bautista that I– as an admitted layman– haven’t noticed.
What do you think? Is Bautista a good fit for Drax the Destroyer, or were you hoping for a different actor? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
