Hasbro’s Star Wars team paid tribute to the history of the saga with their Toy Fair 2019 reveals.
The Star Wars team was really up front during their presentation at the Toy Fair Fan Event– they revealed so many toys toward the end of 2018, they didn’t have much up their sleeves at the moment. We did see a few new Vintage Collection figures (like the Stormtrooper and Elite Praetorian Guard) and exclusives that will accent the HasLab Sail Barge, which will finally be shipping this Spring (more on that in a moment). Those new items include a Jabba’s Palace playset and skiff guard disguise Lando for Wal-Mart, and Jabba’s desert skiff and Skiff three-pack as fan channel exclusives.
We also saw some brand new branches of the Star Wars tree, including the 8-inch HyperReal series, the most intricately detailed action figures Hasbro has ever produced, whose articulation is entirely masked by flexible surfaces over a stainless steel and plastic skeleton base. HyperReal kicks off with an immaculate Darth Vader (who is so detailed he even sports Arubesh text above the buttons on his life support chestplate), and he will be followed by Luke Skywalker later this year, to replicate their duel at the end of The Empire Strikes Back in the most film-accurate way ever at this scale.
Many of Hasbro’s other new products celebrated current and upcoming anniversaries within Star Wars’ history. The Retro Collection will reissue six of the original 1977 Kenner action figures, painstakingly replicated to be as close to the originals as possible… right down to their faux-distressed vintage back cards to signify nearly 40 years of shelf wear. The six– Luke, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, and Stormtrooper– will be joined by Grand Moff Tarkin, making his Kenner debut after all these years. This figure looks incredible, just as he would have been realized by Kenner had he come out in ’77. It’s taken almost four decades, but the final major character from the first Star Wars film has finally joined the original Kenner toy line, which is incredible. Tarkin gets his own vintage style bubble card, which will be packed inside a reissue of the classic Escape From The Death Star board game.
That’s not the only milestone for Star Wars this year– 2019 also marks the 20th anniversary of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and Hasbro will ring in that landmark with a pair of Prequel Black Series exclusives for this year’s Celebration. Ep 1 Obi Wan and Darth Maul will be available only at Celebration 2019, on eye catching foil-stamped blister cards which replicate the Phantom Menace card art. For those who can’t attend the convention, Obi Wan will join Dr. Aprha, BT-1, 0-0-0, Ezra Bridger, and Chopper in The Black Series 21 later this summer, while the revised Maul– with real scan paint apps– will round out the second Archive Collection, available this Fall.
While the quantity of the Star Wars team’s showing was small, the quality was through the roof. I think every release will find a very happy audience, whether you’re a fan of The Black Series, the Vintage Collection, role play lightsabers with the fun, interactive new Lightsaber Academy releases, or even retro Kenner collectors who can finally add Tarkin to the collection.
