47 Ronin is one of the most iconic legends in Japan, a story told time and again through the ages (including a great comic book version recently by Mike Richardson and Stan Sakai). But now it’s also going Hollywood, as a CGI action-heavy flick starring Keanu Reeves.
The trailer for the movie is below, and what’s clear right away is A.) this movie will have nothing to do with the Japanese fable, and B.) Keanu is really giving his all here. I can dig that, and I’m impressed he can keep a straight face through all the CGI silliness at hand.
But the ramped up, battle robes and dragons and weird creatures have a certain charm– I actually kind of like the production value here, in spite of itself. I’m not expecting 47 Ronin to be a great– or even very good– movie, but it totally looks like a fun one.
