New character descriptions have surfaced for the cast of Joss Whedon’s SHIELD series, coming to ABC.
As soon as ABC announced last month that its upcoming Marvel TV series would center around SHIELD, the superspy agency that polices super powered beings in the Marvel Universe, I knew it was a solid idea. SHIELD is one of those groups that’s pervasive enough that they can be as related (or unrelated) to the big screen heroes as anyone decides.
Add to that we have a great person making those decisions in Joss Whedon, who is spearheading the show and may direct the pilot. That remains to be seen, as does which (if any) existing Marvel Cinematic Universe characters will show up on the small screen, but
TV Line has revealed the character descriptions for some all-new cast members for the show:
SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.
AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.
AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.
AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.
I might be mistaken, but none of these names sound familiar from the Nicky Fury comics, so I’m gonna say these are new characters being created for the show. This makes sense, as the descriptions above feel pretty Whedon-esque, like they’d fit into any of his past wheel wells nicely.
While I’m not expecting this show to attract the likes of Sam Jackson, or even Cobie Smulders as regulars, I’m curious if the characters from the recent (and awesome!) Avengers short film Item 47 will resurface for this series? Or will our “guest stars” be more in the vein of comic-based Easter eggs, like Gabe Jones or Sam Wilson? There’s still quite a few questions, but I’m remaining as intrigued as ever.
