Witches! And campiness, probably!
Ryan Murphy and the crew behind American Horror Story descended on PaleyFest last weekend, and the show’s creator let slip the subtitle (and theme) of the upcoming third season of the gonzo FX series. This October, get ready for American Horror Story: Coven.
There have been rumors that Season Three would deal with witches, and this name seems to confirm that. I missed the clues allegedly peppered in throughout the rather good Asylum story from Season Two, but I can dig this new direction.
At its best, AHS is entertaining in how it unapologetically revels in sleazy camp and schlock, combining exploitative sex, surreal dips into the supernatural and creepy, gory violence. I’d imagine we’ll see plenty of all three in Coven, and I’ll be super-disappointed if the witch theme doesn’t get us at least one human sacrifice and/ or scene of gratuitously nude women conducting a ritual in the woods.
The new season is filming now in New Orleans, so it stands to reason they won’t be based in Salem (which makes sense, since Season Two already claimed Massachusetts as its turf), and past that, who knows what they have planned? I’m interested to find out this Fall…
