Looks like that Gambit movie is closer than we all thought. About 3 hours ago, actor Channing Tatum, who had been rumored to be playing the character in the upcoming X-Men Apocalypse since early May of last year, revealed the movie would be released in the Fall of 2016. At least that’s the conclusion we’re left to draw with the current evidence. But read it for yourself.
I mean, seems pretty obvious, right?
It’s not that much of a surprise considering that Fox has already greenlit another spin-off from a character that is being rebooted from the huge dud that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine (*cough*DEADPOOL*cough*). It’s clear that they’re going to be using the considerable stable of characters from the X-Men comics to start building a proper franchise (along with Fantastic Four) ala the Marvel MCU.
The reaction to Channing Tatum’s casting has been very positive considering he’s just coming off of a slew of successful projects (22 Jump Street, Foxcatcher, Magic Mike) and is set to star in some large scale new films (Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and The Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending) along with returning to do the sequels to both Magic Mike and 22 Jump Street, and his sex symbol status definitely fits the character.
In other words, you can bank on this box office for the star power alone. Of course the movie has a long way to go before it gets the respect of the comic fans, considering the character of Gambit has a pretty strong following; but IMDB does list Gambit creator Chris Claremont as writing the treatment along with new writer Joshua Zetumer working out a screenplay, so there’s a least a little comic influence early on in the project, so that’s a good sign. At the date of this article, no director has been announced however.
Still, keep an eye on Kastor’s Korner for more information about the Gambit movie as it becomes available.
