John Boyega’s Star Wars figure is the perfect toy to transform into his other sci-fi hero, Moses from Attack the Block!
As soon as I heard John Boyega had been cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I was beyond excited. Not just because he’s an awesome actor, but because his inevitable Star Wars action figure would be the perfect base for a custom of his coolest role, Moses in Attack the Block.
I made this Moses figure using the 6″ Black Series Finn from Hasbro, with the arms and jacket courtesy of NECA’s Hunger Games Peeta. The should joints on both figures are just held in place with pegs into the soft plastic torso, so all I had to do was heat both figures under a lamp and they popped right off and on. I also took Finn’s lower legs off at the knees and replaced them with lower legs from Marvel Legends Drax. I switched his Frankenstein shoes for the sneakers on NECA’s Bishop, which look pretty good on this figure.
Moses’ hat came from a WWE figure, with the brim painted red and the logo taken off with nail polish remover. Finn’s sword came out of the parts bin, and I used a small square of navy blue cloth for his soft goods bandana. Overall, Moses was able to retain all the original figure’s articulation, and he’s pretty close to film accurate, which is enhanced by Hasbro’s solid portrait of Boyega.
Since Moses was a Christmas gift for my girlfriend, I decided to go one step further and make a custom package for him, too. I took the measurements from a Star wars Black Series window bow, and used the awesome Attack the Block poster by Tyler Stout as the base of the box art. I printed off the inlay art and front and back panels, and glued them on top of the original box, which gives a nice, finished effect to the custom.
Attack the Block is one of my favorite movies, and I’ve been wishing for toys based on this flick for years. That may never happen, but I was really glad to pay tribute to the film all the same!
