Details Surface on Pixar’s Next Animated Short

lava-featA high concept short will compliment what may be Pixar’s most ambitious film yet.

It’s just under one year now until Pixar’s Inside Out hits theaters (364 days to be exact), and I can’t wait.  The movie stars a great voice cast including Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling and Lewis Black… as the emotions inside a little girl’s head.

This feels like a great concept to me– weird and interesting and definitely unique… what director Pete Docter is doing here feels like the boundary-pushing Pixar of yesteryear, and I couldn’t be more glad to have such an exciting concept coming to the screen.  And the characters look amazing!

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, “Lava” is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.

That description sounds so abstract to me, and so full of potentially stunning visuals that I just love it!  This short and feature combo may prove to be the headiest, high concept family night at the movies ever conceived.  As far as I’m concerned, that’s very good news, and I couldn’t be more glad to see Pixar step back into the arena of making thoughtful, well crafted, original films.

Disney-Pixar has also released the first poster for Lava, which you can see below:
