Hasbro Star Wars Panel: New Black Series, Rebels & More

By bill - July 26, 2014

wampa-featGet ready for more Black series beasts and much more from Hasbro’s Star Wars empire.

Yesterday was Hasbro’s Star Wars panel at Comic Con, during which they revealed lots of new toys hitting stores in the coming months.  The overall Star Wars collection is still quite diverse, with products ranging from the kid-centric Rebels collection to the collector-skewing Black Series, in both 3.75″ and 6″ scales.

I do dig the design work in Rebels; while the character designs feel a little too samey as the Clone Wars animated series, the aesthetic is so inspired by Ralph McQuarrie’s original production artwork that I can’t help but get into it.  I’m hoping we’ll see these characters in a format better than the dull 5-point of articulation basic figures we’ve seen so far.  Not that they look bad, but they certainly continue Hasbro’s trend of dialing back on their basic toys.

The Black Series, on the other hand, looked much, much better– the 6″ scale has been outstanding, and the new additions revealed at the panel were all awesome.  Here’s the rundown:

  • TIE Pilot
  • Clone Trooper Sergeant (green)
  • Han Solo Stormtrooper Disguise (with removable helmet)
  • Bossk, complete with articulated jaw and tongue!
  • Emperor Palpatine

New Black Series deluxe figures will also include a Luke Skywalker and Wampa two-pack (yup, Wampa’s arm comes off) and Han Solo with his Tauntaun.

New 3/75″ Black series figures are set to include:

  • Yavin Ceremony Leia (with soft-goods cape)
  • Chewbacca Yavin Ceremony
  • Clone Commander Wolffe (in Desert Armor)
  • Captain Rex (new head and torso)
  • Clone Commander Doom
  • Jon “Dutch” Vanders
  • Darth Vader – Yoda’s Test (with removable face-plate)

Plus, there will be two store exclusives!  In addition to the previous announced prototype Boba Fett coming to Walgreens this Fall, Target will get a sick looking box set called the Imperial Shadow Squadron.  This set features a Stormtrooper, Biker Scout and Speeder Bike, all in a striking new black deco.  This will make one hell of a gift for Star Wars geeks this holiday season.

I do admit, part of me was really hoping for some kind of Episode VII tease, but with that entire production skipping Comic Con, I can’t say I’m surprised Hasbro had nothing to tease.  Overall, I’m happy with the new reveals– especially the Black figures.  I still can’t believe Hasbro lured me back into the Star Wars game with this latest rebrand, but with figures as cool as the classic-leaning Black series, it’s impossible to resist their charms.
