Hasbro has assembled a very diverse– and pricey– assortment of 2013 Comic Con exclusives.
Now that it looks like all their exclusives have been revealed, we can start considering Hasbro’s SDCC exclusives overall. Obviously, the major trend here is higher prices and larger sets– we’ve got only one exclusive under $50, and I think the My Little Pony or the Deadpool Corps is the smallest set, size-wise.
Don’t get me wrong– I love big toys, and sets like the Thunderbolts in their tower or the Autobots GI Joe set are truly rad. Getting them home from San Diego to the East Coast, however… will be decidedly less rad.
I’m curious what Hasbro’s motivation was behind this shift to larger, more expensive sets? Companies tend to offer one big exclusive– it essentially turns their customers into walking billboards on the Convention floor. But offering multiple large sets like this year has me wondering if the challenges of getting these exclusives home will impact sales? The money certainly won’t– while these sets tend to range from $50 to $100 each, they still feel worth their value (the Thunderbolts, for example, breaks out to less than $20 per figure).
Overall, I really like what Hasbro’s doing with this year’s exclusives… there’s some very cool pieces here which should appeal to a wide variety of collectors and fans. Good luck getting them home from the Con, though.
