Learn The Origins Of The Lone Ranger In The New Trailer

The Lone Ranger gets a second trailer, that schools you in his background.

I have no idea what to expect from Disney’s reboot of The Lone Ranger.  The first trailer didn’t do much for me, Johnny Depp looks quite silly in his over-the-top Tonto getup, and hints that the script would paint Armie Hammer’s Lone Ranger as a buffoon (not unlike Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet) didn’t sound promising.

All that being said, I’m impressed that, based on this trailer, they’re sticking rather close to the classic origin of the masked rider, which has always been a delightfully pulpy origin for a pre-super hero like Lone Ranger, so that’s a good sign.  Aside from that setup, this trailer still doesn’t give us much to go on regarding the tone of the film– aside from that obnoxiously overt smash cut to the Pirates of the Caribbean logo.

Say what you will, the first Pirates is still a very fun movie, despite the bloat and excess that sank the sequels.  Personally, I have a little more fealty to The Lone Ranger as a property than the theme park ride, so I’m not sure if changes to the dynamic that have made Lone Ranger work for decades will be as effective here, but sticking to the origin gives me a sign of hope that they’re going in the right direction.

Time will tell… in the meantime, here’s the new trailer:
