Marvel Launches ‘Unlimited Plus,’ Reveals Gold Ultron Exclusive

Gold Ultron will be the next Marvel Digital Comics subscription exclusive.

For the past few years, Marvel Unlimited, the company’s digital comics service, has been attempting to entice new users to check them out using a series of exclusive Marvel action figures as bait.  Up until now, we’ve only seen 3.75″ Marvel Universe figures, including Nick Fury, X-Force Archangel, Unmasked Dr. Doom and Old Man Logan.

It looks like this year, Marvel is upping the ante by including their first Marvel Unlimited Legends exclusive– a redeco of the Iron-Man Legends Ultron in gold.  It’s a sharp looking figure, and a logical variant based on his recent comic book appearances.  And hey– he looks really neat!

The downside of this is the price tag– the Marvel Unlimited Plus package, which includes the Ultron figure, a variant cover comic book and some other swag clocks in at a hundred bucks.  Now, here’s where my ignorance is gonna show…

I subscribed to the Nick Fury year for Marvel’s digital service, which I believe cost $50 at the time, and I felt it wasn’t worth it.  I honestly have no idea how the system has improved since then on Marvel’s end (I’m sure it has), but what I can say is I didn’t have a tablet or smartphone back when I was a subscriber… although it made me wish I did.

Digital comics have become so much more accessible now, I’m betting Marvel Unlimited would feel like a much more fulfilling service now, even a the inflated $100 price tag.  I should be able to prove that theory soon enough, because there’s no way I’m not getting that Ultron (who’s on sale now, by the way).
