A few weeks ago, Mattel said they were trying to re-imagine how they did figure reveals, and it looks like they found at least one new avenue using yesterday’s reveal of Mekaneck! The Masters figure was revealed through a special email sent to subscribers of Club Eternia, as a “perk” for being a member. Since we at Kastor’s Korner ARE members of Club Eternia, we’ve got the images to show off– get all the details on Mekaneck right here!
Mekaneck looks pretty amazing, the spitting image of his classic 80’s figure, complete with mace and that unique chest armor. I love the inclusion of two different sized neck extension pieces, giving lots of display options and replicating the original toy’s action feature nicely.
What I love most about this is the way Mattel handled this figure reveal. Sending through email to Club Eternia members is incredibly smart– I mean, who is the target market of the product if not the people who already committed to buy it?– but it’s also a more inclusive, fan-friendly approach than we’ve seen from Matty in the past.
It’s no secret that Mattel has always been “chummy” with a select few sites who shall remain nameless here. When one of them got exclusive rights on the Mosquitor teaser images, I was afraid Mattel’s plan would be to host all reveals through their three friends’ sites, leaving the rest of us– as fans and as writers– high and dry. The option to send reveals through email to the Club Eternia database cuts out the middle man, and also serves as a nice extra incentive to fans, on top of the subscription itself.
Way to go, Matty– sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones!
