Michael Douglas Is Playing Hank Pym In Ant-Man (!!!)

hank-pym-featMarvel’s awesome casting streak continues as Michael Douglas comes on board Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man movie.

As if the names Edgar Wright, Paul Rudd, Joe Cornish and Marvel Phase 3 weren’t enough to have me super excited for 2015’s Ant-Man, Variety has just revealed that Michael Douglas will play Dr. Hank Pym.  For those who don’t know, Pym was a frequent Avenger in the comics, who served as the original Ant-Man (among several other heroic aliases).  His mantle was taken over by Scott Lang, who Rudd will play in the upcoming movie.

This makes a ton of sense, since Pym had a tendency to skew into some dark avenues which would make him a better supporting player than a lead for a Marvel project– he’s dealt with a litany of mental issues, created the villainous android Ultron (in the comics), assaulted his wife and even went full-blown villain on more than one occasion.  Marvel’s Kevin Feige addressed as much when he discussed the casting news:

“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves.”

Douglas becomes the latest elder statesman of acting to join the Marvel movie universe, and between Pym’s shady history and the original “typo” in the Variety piece that he would be playing the villain of Wright’s movie, I’m curious exactly how he’ll be portrayed in the film?… In the comics, Lang stole the Ant-Man suit and tech from a retired Pym and ended up changing his criminal ways to become a hero, but maybe there’s more urgency to the theft in the movie if Pym is off his rocker?

If the good Doctor actually ISN’T actually all that good, he’d follow sinister suit with other recent Marvel players like Sir Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin, and Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce, one of whom we know to be evil, and the other who will almost certainly turn out to be.

Either way, count me in– I love this casting news!
