Last month, Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9 and the upcoming Chappie, released a whole slew of concept artwork he had commissioned for a fifth Aliens movie, one that would (somehow) resurrect Cpl. Dwayne Hicks and place Ellen Ripley in a Space Jockey-esque getup, among other things.
I really loved the paintings– there was some truly intriguing stuff going on in these would-be scenes, as well as some fan service I would be happy enough to see become a reality. To put it another way, I don’t NEED Michael Biehn back in this franchise, but it certainly would be nice to have him.
It appears I wasn’t the only one who connected with these images– there’s been a huge, mostly positive response online and Fox has apparently taken notice. While nothing is set in stone, Blomkamp shared this on Instagram yesterday, alluding to the fact that his Alien 5 movie may have been picked up:
From Fox’s standpoint, this seems perfectly credible. Prometheus 2 is off doing its own thing, allegedly divorcing itself entirely from the Alien mythology. And Fox has essentially had this franchise sitting on the shelf for over 15 years, so why not do something with it?
Had this all taken place after District 9 was released, I would be losing my shit completely right now. But Elysium seems to have been made exclusively to cool me on Blomkamp as a director, and if Chappie is another dud that will be two strikes for him.
Still, I love love LOVE the Alien universe, and have been dying to revisit it. Even if I’ve lost some faith in Blomkamp as the revolutionary director I once thought he might be, his Alien 5 artwork has enough hints of greatness that I can’t help but get excited that this movie may become a reality. If nothing else, it will be shit ton better than Alien Resurrection.
