Whether you’re into their premium statues, ArtFX+ releases, Bishoujo, or beyond, it’s impossible to deny that Kotobukiya’s collectibles are among the very best looking on the market. Their product range on display at New York Comic Con was particularly impressive, especially the new ArtFX+ reveals.
In addition to the now-complete Spider-Man series, the first statue from the Marvel Defenders collection made its debut. Daredevil will usher in the collection which will also feature Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Daredevil will be available in two unique decos, both classic red and a black and red Shadowlands paint job. This line of ArtFX+ was based on artwork by the legendary Dale Keown, in his first ever collaboration with Kotobukiya.
The DC ArtFX+ also impressed, particularly the stunning Poison Ivy (with bendable wire plants that can be posed around her) and Damian Wayne with Ace the Bathound (who features alternate masked and unmasked heads). Making his debut at NYCC was Rebirth Batman, who joins the just-released Superman.
Star Wars collectors will be happy to see a re-release of the ArtFX+ Imperial Guards, available again in a three pack along with a standing Emperor Palpatine. It’s a great looking pack, and will be a great value at a MSRP of $139.99. Poe Dameron and BB-8 will be released in a matter of weeks, and the final production sample in the showcase was particularly stunning. The sculpt and paint work have made this one of the best portraits I have seen of Oscar Isaac in any form. We will see more Star Wars ArtFX+, but they will remain focused on the live action movies as opposed to other avenues of the Star Wars universe like Rebels.
The highly popular Bishoujo Collection was well represented, including a close look at Shunya Yamashita’s artwork for Captain Marvel, who will be released next Spring, and a gorgeous paint master of the new Supergirl Bishoujo statue, who will be released after Katana. Nightwing, the first Ikemen release from Kotobukiya, also looks great. The first edition of this statue will include a third headsculpt, in addition to the masked and unmasked that will come standard. Jason Todd, the Red Hood, will be the second Ikemen release scheduled for 2018.
We’ve seen a number of characters being repeated in the Bishoujo Collection, such as Supergirl and Carol Danvers. According to the company, this trend may continue with other popular female characters previously released in the collection. The popularity of characters like Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Scarlet Witch, Phoenix, and Rogue have made them all potential candidates to be revisited as all new Bishoujo statues.
The Horror Bishoujo will carry on with a female version of Ash Williams, and the announcement that Pinhead from Hellraiser will follow. A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 Freddy Krueger ArtFX will join the amazing Jason Voorhees statue, and Kotobukiya will release a pair of ArtFX+ statues based on the Resident Evil: Vendetta animated movie, as well.
