NYCC 2017: Hasbro’s Star Wars Reveals

By bill - October 6, 2017

Hasbro’s Star Wars team revealed some awesome new Black Series releases, heralded the return of Star Wars Mighty Muggs, and left us feeling really good about The Vintage Collection.

While Hasbro does not have a presence at New York Comic Con, they did host some off-site events to reveal new product in conjunction with the show. The reveals included Benicio Del Toro’s The Last Jedi character DJ, who will join Resistance Rey and Captain Rex as the fourth wave of Last Jedi themed 6″ figures. This means that Hasbro has included at least one female character in each assortment from the new film… that’s pretty impressive considering how much of a boys’ club Star Wars was, even a few years ago.

Also revealed were some long rumored OT characters, who will be available in the Fall (presumably after spending the summer focused on young Han Solo?).  Lando Calrissian is coming back to the Black Series in his Skiff Guard disguise, and he’s being joined by 4-LOM and Dengar, who will bolster the ranks of the classic Bounty Hunters from Empire.  All three of these figures look incredible.  The Hasbro team have a special place in their hearts when it comes to Bounty Hunters, and we’ve seen time and again they seem to pay extra attention to figures like Boba Fett, IG-88, and Bossk; the newest hunters are certainly no exception.  Interesting to note, 4-LOM will feature elbow articulation and working hydraulics, unlike C3PO, to help him hold his rifle.

The Darth Vader deluxe helmet continues to impress, featuring the Sith Lord’s breathing sound effect, and multiple segmented pieces so the mask can assemble or disassemble as seen in the movies. Despite the size and incredible complexity of this piece, the SRP should remain at $100, much like the wearable Marvel helmets we’re seeing.

If you know me at all, you know I adore the Star Wars basic figures. So I was very happy to see several new reveals, including a two-pack featuring Finn in first Order Officer disguise and Captain Phasma with her new silver lance weapon. Upcoming single packs will include Maz Kanata sporting a new backpack she will wear in Last Jedi, and Resistance pilot C’ai Threnalli.

While no new Vintage Collection toys were revealed, the Hasbro team emphasized that they want this collection to be an ongoing conversation with fans… they want our input, our feedback, and our insight to help shape and guide this toy line based on our vision as much as theirs. While that may sound like a line, after speaking with the team for the better part of an hour on the subject, I can attest they are 100% genuine in this approach. Hopefully, I’ll have more exciting news on what that means for you, gentle readers, in the near future.

We’ll have a lot more NYCC coverage throughout the weekend. But in the meantime, enjoy some photos from Hasbro’s Star Wars showcase!
