I have no idea if Pixels will be any good… the mix is basically right down the middle– on the one hand, it stars Adam Sandler, and it’s a comedy which means he will probably be doing his “funny” Adam Sandler schtick. But then, it also stars Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad and Michelle Monaghan, all of whom I tend to love on screen. Conversely, this is a movie that positions human speedbump Kevin James as the President of the United States… and yet it’s based on this incredibly cool short film by Patrick Jean. So you take the good with the bad, I guess.
Well, now we have one more thing in the good category– Sony has rolled out a series of teaser one sheets, and rather than spotlight Sandler’s mug per usual, they feature some familiar faces for any 80s arcade gamer, including Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Centipede. I’m guessing this 3D rendered, yet still pixelated look will carry over into the creature designs in the movie, and I personally really dig it– these classic game characters laying siege to iconic cities packs the perfect blend of silliness with some echoes of actual, real world stakes. That’s the tone of the short film, and what I hope director Chris Columbus can bring to the feature film version.
I think these posters are a way more interesting option than Adam Sandler’s floating head, and they’ve certainly managed to make me a little more optimistic about the movie. While I’m happy we will apparently be seeing real, licensed video game characters in Pixels, the double edge of this sword is this could devolve into nostalgia baiting very easily. And I’ll admit, these posters kinda hit me with that twice already– not only do they make me pine for those days in the arcade, but they’re kind of making me want to re-watch Wreck It Ralph again, too.
