SDCC 2015: Can Hannibal Be Resurrected As A Movie?

By bill - July 12, 2015

hannibal-featBryan Fuller hints that it’s possible.

Hannibal held a panel at Comic Con yesterday, and despite the show’s recent (and utterly tragic) cancellation, there was a lot of energy in the room.  That’s not entirely surprising considering the caliber of talent involved with the show, to say nothing of the fact that Season Three is getting into the REALLY juicy stuff, as Tom Harris’ first novel Red Dragon is already beginning to play out.

So far, there’s been no concrete word of a solution to the whole cancellation issue– Amazon and Netflix both officially passed on picking up the series last week– but Fuller said during the panel that they’re looking into the idea of bringing the series back as a movie.  The cast was definitely on board with this idea, and quite honestly, so am I.  Based on where it seems Hannibal Season Three is going, I’d assume the movie would take on this story’s version of Silence of the Lambs.  It seems like a movie would be a nice way to bring this telling of the Hannibal Lecter saga full circle.  We had two solid motion picture adaptations of Red Dragon (Manhunter and the aptly titled Red Dragon), so getting a second Silence adaptation would be kind of nice.  And never would I ever imagine a retelling of Silence could top Jonathan Demme’s classic… but with Bryan Fuller and this cast, I suddenly think it’s very possible.

Keep your fingers crossed, my fellow dinner guests…
