SDCC 2016: On The Floor With NECA

NECA-SDCC-2016-featWhether you’re into super heroes, mutants, or monsters, NECA had some gems in their San Diego Comic-Con display during Preview Night.

Even with only about half their new reveals in the cases, NECA’s Comic-Con display was– as is to be expected– a show stopper.  There was a BIG focus on Quarter Scale figures in this year’s display, and from the 1990 movie-inspired Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, to the Mayor Penguin from Batman Returns, to the comic-style Deadpool who will usher in a new iteration of Marvel figures in Q-scale, the lineup was truly impressive.

The next wave of Kenner tribute Predator figures were on display, as well as factory samples of the Ash vs Evil Dead figures, all of which looked awesome.  Just a few days before Comic-Con, NECA revealed their Muhammad Ali vs Superman two-pack, based on the art of Neal Adams, but those promotional images didn’t do justice to how great these figures actually look on display.

I’ll spare you the gory details, but things haven’t exactly been smooth sailing between NECA and Konami in terms of their awesome Contra retro game action figures, but it did my heart good to see Billy and Lance in the Comic-Con showcase, which leads me to believe these guys may be delayed but are certainly NOT canceled.

We were also treated to a look at the next Ultimate Terminator releases– a leather jacket-clad T-800 from the first film, and a motorcycle cop T-1000 from T2, and lots of great new Mego style retro figures, including Bill and Ted (and Rufus!), plus Clark Griswold, and some Rob Zombie and Nightmare on Elm Street figures sure to please all you gore hounds.

The most bittersweet highlight of NECA’s convention booths is always the custom diorama displays.  On the one hand, they’re always incredible… but on the other, it’s a shame we’ll never get to see them offered at retail.  At least we can sure as hell appreciate them at Comic-Con, and it’s hard not to, when you take a look at the TMNT Arcade Game inspired city street backdrop. NECA built for this year.

We’ll offer more updates from NECA later this weekend as the rest of their showcase is revealed, but for now check out these photos of their Preview Night display:
