The word came out Friday that Alfred Pennyworth, butler to Bruce Wayne and long time confidant, would be played by veteran actor Jeremy Irons. Irons has a long list of acting credits, and like Michel Cane adds a certain amount of seriousness to the role. I would never have thought of him for the role, but eagerly awaiting to see how much of an impact he will have in this minor role.
The other role filled on Friday was the main villain, Lex Luthor. There have been rumors swirling around that the role would go to an older actor like Brian Cranston or Denzel Washington or slightly younger Joaquin Phoenix, but they ended up going younger. Jesse Eisenberg has been given the role, sending fanboys once again to the internet to complain.
There was a similar to the uproar about Affleck’s casting, but I have a very wait and see attitude about all the casting news. The team have shown they can do a good film, and why not give them the benefit of the doubt until we see what they do with the actors. I think a lot of this stems from the fans wanting an older Luthor who is a ruthless businessman, like in the JLU cartoon, but I can see what they could be doing here with Eisenberg. The world has just been told that aliens exist, and they destroyed one of the biggest cities. They look to a family who is know to have produced weapons and building supplies in the past, the Luthors. The Army also wants to find a way to stop the alien who lives among us, and the look the the nerdy guy, Lex. When Superman was created the scientist expectation was someone older in a lab coat like Crantson, but in reality the brightest of our times look more like the Big Bang Theory guys, making Eisenberg a perfect choice. He has proven he can play the ultra smart guy in the Social Network, and the con artist in Now You See Me, so why not the villain in the new DC movie world?
