Toy Fair 2013: McFarlane Toys Brings The Walking Dead To Life

By bill - February 12, 2013

McFarlane Toys had a great showing at Toy Fair, with lots of amazing new products from The Walking Dead, some exciting new properties and more.  Check out the full story!

McFarlane Toys showed off some great new properties at Toy Fair, including Rabbids, based on the hit video game.  This multi-scale, multi-format line will be released along with the new Nickelodeon cartoon series, and will offer figures in 4″, 6″ and plush formats, with all kinds of adorable and unique Rabbids.  Larger scale figures will even feature swappable features, to customize your own Rabbid!

Another new license for the toymakers is Assassin’s Creed.  While the first figures to see release will be based on Assassin’s Creed 3 (the first Revolution-era figures from the franchise), McFarlane’s license includes all corners of the Assassin’s Creed universe.  Wave One will include Connor, Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton (Wolf Connor), each loaded with articulation and great accessories.  A fourth figure, still under wraps, will be released in July, and three more figures will join the collection in the Fall.

McFarlane Toys was very proud of their Resin Program, the new high end statue program. The limited edition statues such as The Haunt and Curse of Spawn have been very well-received, and 2013 will see a classic Spawn statue released for the character’s 20th Anniversary, as well as the first Halo statue and the show-stopping Walking Dead Michonne statue.  This stunning piece displays the zombie-slayer in mid action, tearing down a pair of Walkers.  The sense of motion in this piece is fantastic, and the stylized use of motion-oriented blood sprays and posing immediately reminded me of the fantastic Star Wars Unleashed line, which was a source of inspiration for this design.  Michonne is available for pre-order now– Click Here to order yours today before she is gone!

For the second year in a row, McFarlane is teaming up with Greg Nicotero and Anchor Bay for a limited edition display box for The Walking Dead Season 3 DVD and Blu Ray.  This special edition case is modeled after The Governor’s tank full of heads, with working lights that shine on the Walkers, who can also move back and forth in the case!

On the toy front, both the TV and Comic Series lines will continue.  Series 3 of the TV set will feature Merle, Michonne, the Autopsy Zombie and both of Michonne’s pets.  On display from Series 4 was Carl, complete with medical bag and a removable hat.  While the prototypes were not out, Wave 4 will also include The Governor (with two swappable heads for his eye patched look or with both eyes), Andrea and two variants of the Riot Gear Zombies from the taking of the prison.  Both riot Walkers include an action feature– the first is the gas mask version, whose mask– and face– can rip off to replicate the grisly scene in the show, while the second will feature a neck-ripping action, when the included knife is jammed up underneath his helmet.

The most exciting news for me was the reveal of Comic Series Wave 2, which looks amazing!  The lineup includes Glenn in Riot Gear, The Governor (who includes an alternate one-eyed head, and a swappable severed arm!), Penny with the Walker heads tank and bucket of body parts, and one of Michonne’s pets, who includes removable arms, jaw and head, as well as plug-in intestines.  To collect both of the pets, one of the heads in Penny’s tank can be removed and replaced with the Pet figure’s head, to have two unique Walkers.

We had the exclusive chance to check out the final prototypes of the new comic figures, and I can say fans of the first Comic Series will be blown away by these new ones!  With even more great articulation, accessories and gorgeous sculpts, these figures are going to be mind-blowingly cool.  The modular parts on the pets is cool enough, but the BEST news I heard was the heads on the humans will also share a universal size!  This means Glenn’s head can be removed, to build yourself a riot gear version of Rick, The Governor or any other future figures.

San Diego Comic Con fans, however, won’t have to customize their riot gear Governor, as the armored version of the villain– complete with new eye patched head and severed arm– will be this Summer’s Skybound/ McFarlane exclusive at the convention.

With an amazing attention to accurate detail, fun and gross playability and fantastic accessories and articulation, this will be a huge year for McFarlane’s Walking Dead toys.  Between these, their Resin Program and fun new properties like Assassin’s Creed and Rabbids, this is going to be an exciting year for sure!
