New Trailer Sees Star Trek… Back Into Gritty Sameness

star-trek-darkness-featWatch the new trailer for The Trek Knight… or is it Trekfall?

There’s a new international trailer out for Star Trek Into Darkness, and it goes right back to the “grim n gritty” approach that most of the promotions for the movie have taken.  Plus, random Alice Eve in a bikini!

Look, I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer about this movie… I really liked Abrams’ first Trek movie, which was a lot of fun.  The last clip that came out last week finally seemed to have that same sense of energy, and I’m honestly hoping the final movie does, too.  This trailer burned that goodwill for me, making Into Darkness look like the latest in a long, long line of Dark Knight ripoffs, which is the exact opposite of what made the last Trek worth watching.

I have some faith in JJ Abrams, though, and he assembled a great cast for this franchise, so their on-screen chemistry should get us halfway there.  Even if Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan does end up another carbon copy of Heath Ledger’s Joker, Into Darkness could still be worth seeing as long as it’s fun.  Skyfall proved you can ape Christopher Nolan and have some fun, too.  As long as Star Trek can stay out of the way of its own self-afflicted gravitas, it’s got a chance.

What do you think– am I being too critical?  Does this new trailer work for you?
