TV Korner: Doctor Who – Five Things to Take Away from “In the Forest of the Night” (Season 8, Ep. 10)

By staff-writers - November 3, 2014

This was hands down the worst episode of the season! Wow was this bad!

Hello Puddin’ heads:

Very briefly, Clara and Danny host several students during an overnight visit to a museum. Upon, stepping out, they find London is overrun with trees. It’s as if a forest just exploded out of nowhere and engulfed the Earth.

One of their students, a girl named Maebh (rhymes with wave), knocks on the TARDIS and gets the Doctor’s attention. Ultimately, Clara and Danny (CLANNY) and kids meet up with the Doctor and soon discover a massive fireball is heading to Earth from the Sun.

The Doctor discovers the forest is Earth’s “shield” to suck up the heat and carbon dioxide and when the fireball strikes, the forest turns to dust and everyone is saved.

This is really a weak episode.

Why?

***

1. CLANNY (CLARA AND DANNY) IS JUST SUCKING THE LIFE OUT OF THE SHOW

YES! We get it! Clara has found love! He is not the wrinkled old man that Matt Smith turned into. I must be the only person who think Danny is just a “I can’t have the Doctor who is now old, so I will have him.”

I’ve never bought the chemistry between these two and the chemistry between her and Capaldi is non-existent. I don’t understand what is happening to her character especially when you consider the next point.

2. CLARA ACTUALLY ENCOURAGED THE DOCTOR TO LEAVE AND LET THE KIDS FRY BY THE FIREBALL

This moment shocked me the most. Okay, the fireball is definite and is ready to burn Earth. Clara encourages the Doctor to get into his TARDIS and run.

Why is Clara encouraging this? Because she doesn’t want anyone of her students to be “the last of their kind.”

This is the same woman who was ready to sacrifice the Earth to see the moon hatch a space chicken!

If I were the parents of her school, I would have a word with the principal!

3. THERE IS A SUBPLOT ABOUT A MISSING SISTER…

That girl Maebh who went calling after the Doctor had this “She’s special and crazy and she knows what is happening here” thing. How often do we see this in a show? The crazy person is really not so crazy, but because we are judgmental blah, blah, blah, blah…

Well, Maebh had this odd subplot where her sister went missing. I didn’t quite understand it! While this was happening, her mother decides to search for her daughter on bike in the midst of a screwball instant-forest, so she rides a bike!

I know there are mountain and trail bikers, but her mom was dressed like she was ready to go to the PTA not bike through a trail! In the fact the mother is so important she is credited as “Maebh’s mum.”

Mix these together, it is had to care when Maebh’s sister appears out of nowhere thanks to magic fireflies!

4. DOES ENGLAND OWN CHAINSAWS?

Okay, so England discovers some weird-out-of-nowhere forest appear! What do they do? Officials figure it would be wise to start a forest fire! Oddly, the discover it does not burn.

Wouldn’t it occur to anyone to try out a chainsaw or a machete first? I mean, it’s not like a sword can get out of control and destroy acres and acres of trees, homes, buildings and take lives!

I like to think the leadership of England would be smarter than this. If anything, it proves that TORCHWOOD is needed again.

5. ENOUGH WITH MISSY!!

I would have to say this is the worst set up of the last three seasons that Steven Moffatt has been in charge. When you compare this to the crack in Amy Pond’s wall, Missy is nothing more than that “crazy ex-girlfriend trope” that is a cross between Harry Potter’s Ms. Umbridge and Glenn Close from FATAL ATTRACTION.

Okay, she is in charge of the After-Life/Nethersphere but how is she a threat? She hasn’t done anything except invite people into the Weirdo Heaven and claim the Doctor is her boyfriend.

She’s crazy, not frightening. I don’t want to run from her, I want to walk past her and pretend she isn’t there like some crazy homeless guy who is arguing with a street lamp.
