TV Korner: Doctor Who – Five Things to Take Away from “Mummy on the Orient Express” (Season 8, Ep. 8)

By staff-writers - October 20, 2014

Hello Puddin’ Heads and Friends:

This episode had it all! It had the Doctor, Queen, Mummies and a ton of call backs! Here are the Five Things to Know about “Mummy on the Orient Express”:

1. THINGS WITH CLARA ARE BACK TO NORMAL (FOR NOW)

In the previous week I said how I disliked the idea of Clara complaining about the Doctor. It just made the character unlikable considering, based on Season 7, she has been in the Doctor’s timeline and seen every incarnation of him. (Quick rabbit trail, it is why her complaining about the Doctor’s new appearance was a little off putting in “Deep Breath”.)

However, it is good to see things are better between the two of them.

2. A REAL STEVEN KING FEEL

Every generation a writer can define a genre and the upside of ours’ is we have one – Steven King! This season has had a real Steven King feel to it. From the spider things from “Kill the Moon” to the half-faced man from “Deep Breath” I have loved the horror feel of this season.

I mean look at the mummy victims were seeing and then only the victims could see them before they died!

How Steven King-esque!

3. CALL BACKS A-PLENTY!

I was praying for this and I got it! The Doctor shouted, “Are you my mummy?” at the Mummy! How cool was that? This was nod to the Season One episodes “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances.”

Then when he offered jelly babies to someone was just awesome!

Now mix this with the other nod at the end of “Big Bang” with the Eleventh Doctor,he answers the phone and describes an Egyptian goddess loose on the Orient Express.

4. QUEEN!

It’s funny that in this episode there was a call back to “The Big Bang” in Season 5 (as was mentioned), there was a nod to Queen as the Doctor danced to “A Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”

On this episode, the singer Foxes singing one of Queen’s lesser known songs “Don’t Stop Me Now.” Even Queen guitarist Brian May was posting this on Facebook this week.

Anytime Doctor Who is mixed with Queen it just adds a level of awesome to the show!
