TV Korner: Once Upon a Time 3.17- "The Jolly Roger"Magic can be slippery and unpredictable. It can protect, it can create, but it can also destroy. In this week’s episode of Once Upon a Time Storybrooke gets all three.

In Storybrooke, Regina tells Charming, Snow, and Emma that she has created a new protection spell to keep Zelena away, but Emma wants Regina to teach her to improve her magical abilities. Regina reluctantly agrees, she doesn’t believe Emma’s heart is in it.

Regina sends Emma to a wooden plank bridge that is falling apart, literally at Emma’s feet.  Emma summons her powers just in time and barely avoids death. Regina tells Emma that she has wasted a lot of potential and needs to embrace it.

Back in the Enchanted Forest – in the time that only Hook remembers- Hook and Smee are back to their thieving ways. Still slightly heartbroken from being away from Emma, he tries to reclaim his “pirateness”.  In a dark alley, Hook is taken by surprise when Ariel attacks him welding a knife to his throat. She accuses him of kidnapping Eric, but Hook realizes Blackbeard has stolen the Jolly Roger and must be holding Eric captive. Hook is determined to get his boat back after all what is a pirate without his ship.

Meanwhile in Storybrooke, Hook joins rank with Ariel on her search to find Eric and discovers his cloak at Gold’s shop. Belle puts a locator spell on it, and the cloak takes them to the water, but then the cloak disappears under the surface. Ariel assumes that Eric is dead. She thanks Hook, however, he comes clean and admits to having led to Eric’s death -that he chose his Jolly Roger over Eric’s life.

Ariel gets Hook to admit that he is still in love with Emma, to swear on her name that he’s still capable of love, and when he does, Ariel turns into the Zelena. It appears that Ariel and Eric fell outside her curse and have been living happily on their own island. She then informs Hook that he has to kiss Emma and rob her of her magic, or else she will kill all that Emma loves. Hook has a tough decision to make.

Lots of questions arise in this week’s episode. For every one thing that’s wonderful, there’s something wicked too. Zelena obviously finds Emma to be a threat- but why can’t she kill Emma? How does Snow’s baby play into Zelena’ devious plan for Storybrooke. And after all Hook has gone through- will he go through with  Zelena’s curse? Will he go back to his selfish pirate ways or will he come out a hero?
