Another month and another MOTU Classic figure came in the mail. In September the eight limbed evil minion of Skeletor is Webstor. Webstor gives all of us collectors the feeling of being five years old again, thanks to the guys at Mattel.
This figure is fun, and that is something I don’t find myself saying too much in today’s toy world. I talk about the figure’s paint and sculpt, but most of the time they just sit around my office. Webstor is a figure you want to play with. He can stand, pose, and hang off your desk because of his backpack. While I could talk forever about how cool he looks hanging off my desk, I do have to talk about the figure itself.
He shares parts with both He-man (the belt and body) and Skeletor (forearms and lower legs). With all the reuse of parts in this line, it always amazes my how well the head sculpts are executed, making you forget sometimes the only new thing on the body is the head.
The chest plate and accessories are all new for Webstor. I gave Zodac and Stratos a hard time because of the lack of accessories, but Webster is the exact opposite. He has a back pack with hook and line, which is detachable. The chest piece and back pack are well detailed and are easier to remove than some of the other MOTU figures armor. Not only does the pack have a hook and line, but also an additional four legs, making him a true arachnid. Extras are usually not as detailed as the main figure but each one of the extra legs are articulated at two points. These little touches make this line amazing in today’s toy market, and the high price easier to accept. He also comes with an orange gun, which was given a subtle dark wash.
As with any figure there are a few issues, primarily the hook and gun. Both the hook and gun are made of a softer plastic and are very bendable, and with the placement in the package they are warped. There is also no place to put all the rope from his backpack if he is not hanging from something.
Even with the little criticism of the figure,
with quality like this in the line, they are a lot of fun. The head sculpt alone proves why the Horsemen are the best at this scale around today.
