Empire is reporting that Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature a post-credits stinger starring the X-Men, as seen in Days of Future Past. Sadly, it won’t be a universe-crossing, shared continuity cameo… it will simply be a scene from the new Bryan Singer movie, attached as an extended preview after the Spidey credits roll.
The scene featured sees Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, Lucas Till’s Havok and Evan Jonigkeit’s Toad taking on William Stryker (Josh Helman) and his military men. Without wishing to spoil anything, let’s just say that Mystique once again demonstrates her formidable fighting skills in the brief segment.
We all want to see these various cinematic Marvel universes cross paths into one unified world, and while that likely won’t happen anytime soon, this feels like a baby step toward that goal. I do find it interesting that Fox and Sony would (sort of) team up without Marvel Studios’ involvement… while Marvel proper has seemed the most open to a unified world in the past, their movies are light years ahead of Sony’s and Fox’s Marvel stuff, in terms of quality and a true understanding of the characters.
This move could be a sign that Fox and Sony finally realize neither owns a big enough corner of the Marvel universe to effectively pull off a shared continuity like Marvel Studios has. If that’s the case, maybe this possible team up could be a way to expand what they can both do in their version of the Marvel movie playground?
I’ll remain super hopeful that all these execs can one day stop their bickering and one-ups-man-ship and realize that if they came together, it would basically be like printing all the money in the world.
