New York Toy Fair 2019: Playmobil

By bill - February 19, 2019

Playmobil paid tribute to three major movies at their 2019 Toy Fair showroom, and the upcoming toys from each big screen story look amazing.

Once more, Playmobil will be releasing an entire lineup of figures, dragons, and playsets from Dreamworks’ How To Train Your Dragon series. This year’s assortment is based on the third (and final) chapter of the film series, The Hidden World, and features updates of Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid, and their allies, along with new characters like the Light Fury and the evil Grimmel with his slave dragons. In addition to what you can see below, there will be one more set released, which is being kept secret so as not to spoil the movie. Having seen The Hidden World, I have a few ideas what the spoilery set could be… although I think the sets that have been revealed contain a little spoiler or two, if we’re being honest.

Playmobil’s Ghostbusters line will carry on as well, with a great Ecto-1A vehicle from Ghostbusters II, complete with all four Busters in their grey jumpsuits and pink slime. And as a nod to collectors, who have supported this awesome line for three years, several limited edition collector’s sets will also be released. These include a reissue of the Busters from the first movie, in a very stylish black and green window display box, and for 6″ scale Playmobil figures of the Ghostbusters, each sporting character specific accessories and very nice looking display boxes. While a few other toymakers have used the Playmobil aesthetic for 6″ figures in the past, this is Playmobil’s first foray into the scale, and the figures looked awesome.

Rounding out the Toy Fair display was the full lineup of toys from The Playmobil Movie, which– based on the exotic locales in the playsets and the fun, diverse character designs– is going to be a wild ride when it hits theaters later this year. The sets were super fun, and include everything from a Roman Coliseum to a Western Frontier town, to a food truck and a Porsche! Figures of the film’s main characters will be included with the sets, and also available in a series of blind bags.

I’ve been very impressed by Playmobil’s offerings over the past few years, and 2019’s lineup is their biggest and possibly best yet. Check out their full Toy Fair showcase below!
